Good News priorities
Good News, a national organization of conservative United Methodists, has announced its priorities in influencing the General Conference of the denomination to be held in Denver, Colo., April 16-26. Good News opposes many doctrinal and moral positions of the mainstream of the church. Following a January meeting, the 40-member Good News board said it will oppose any effort to ordain self-avowed, practicing homosexuals and will fight restructuring proposals, a covenenting plan of the Consultation on Church Union, recommendations of the Baptism Study Committee, and efforts to move the headquarters of the Board of Global Ministries from New York to the Washington suburb of Reston.
Pennies for the hungry
The Society of St. Andrew, a Christian community that fights hunger from its base in Bedford County, is beginning a new financial drive, Penny Blizzard '96. The drive will last until Easter Sunday, April 7. Churches are requested to raise $850, the equivalent of a mile of pennies, to help feed the hungry. It is estimated that if 2,000 congregations make their goal, $1.7 million will be generated. The society also promotes the Potato Project and seasonal gleanings of fields by volunteers, with the produce going to food pantries.
VMI religious emphasis
Virginia Military Institute in Lexington is observing Religious Emphasis Weekend through Sunday. Tonight at 7 in Cameron Hall a concert of Christian folk music is planned featuring Phil Keaggy, Darryl Porter and Addison's Walk singers and guitarists. The Campus Praise Team will perform Sunday at 6:15 p.m. in Jackson Memorial Hall. Call 464-7390 for more information.
Carman concert bus
Carman, a contemporary Christian musician, will perform March 16 in Greensboro, N.C. A charter bus, provided by Spirit FM radio station, will leave downtown Roanoke's First Baptist Church parking lot at noon that day.
