Sounds of Celtic music will dominate "In the Deep Heart's Core," now being performed at Barter Theatre through March 3.
Six performers of the Kiltartan Road Ensemble sing, dance and play instruments in the musical which sold out regularly in its nine-month Chicago run last year. It won the Joseph Jefferson Citation for Outstanding Achievement for Original Music.
It is being presented at night Wednesday through Saturday, with afternoon performances on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday, at Barter's Stage II playhouse, across the street from the main theater, which is undergoing renovations.
The music was composed and arranged by Joseph Daniel Sobol, and mixes classical, jazz and traditional Irish sounds with stories and works by Irish poet W.B. Yeats.
The vocals and instrumentals blend with Yeats' autobiographical works, essays and poems showing his passion for Ireland and the fairies and spirits of Celtic legend, his lifelong love of actress and revolutionary Maud Gonne, and the wit and wisdom of his later years.
