Art lecture series

The Art Museum of Western Virginia's noon lecture series, ``American Art Today,'' begins Thursday with a presentation by author Suzi Gablik.

Gablik is the author of three books, most recently ``Conversations Before the End of Time.'' Her lecture, ``Connective Aesthetics: Art After Individualism,'' will examine the work of contemporary artists who contribute their talents to the betterment of their communities and the earth. The lecture will be followed by a book signing.

Upcoming lecturers include realist painter Jack Beal (March 7), sculptor Audrey Flack (March 21), art historian Anthony Janson (April 11), and Katharine Lee, director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (April 25).

Lectures are in the museum's lecture hall, 20 East Church Ave., second floor. They are free and the public is invited to bring lunch. For more information, call the museum at 342-5760.

Theater open house

Clubhouse Kids Productions of Virginia, a children's theater company, will hold an hour-long open house and demonstration drama workshop for children ages 3-14 on Monday at 3:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church parish hall in Bedford.

The open house will include excerpts of the Clubhouse Kids television shows and information about upcoming drama workshops and theater productions. The first workshop is free, and registration for later workshops will be taken at the end of the hour.
