Professor to sign books

BLACKSBURG - Edward Falco, an associate professor in the English department in Virginia Tech, will read and sign copies of his book, "Acid," at University Volume Two Bookstore on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

"Acid" is Falco's second collection of short stories. The volume won the 1995 Richard Sullivan Prize from the University of Notre Dame. One of the short stories, "The Artist," has been selected for inclusion in "The Best American Short Stories 1995" anthology.

Book-signing at cultural center

BLACKSBURG - Charles Christian, an associate professor in the geography department at the University of Maryland, will sign copies of his book, Black Saga, on Monday at the Black Cultural Center in Squires Student Center at Virginia Tech after his 4 p.m. lecture

"Black Saga: The African-American Experience, A Chronology," presents the people, event and places that influenced the culture, identity and perspective of Blacks in the United States.

Miss Montgomery pageant coming

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Miss Montgomery County pageant will be held on Mar. 2, at 11 a.m. at the New River Valley Mall Center Court.

Girls ages two months to 18 years are eligible to participate. Winners in each age group will receive a tiara, banner and trophy.

The fee is $20. Applications and fees for the pageant are due by Feb. 26. Checks should be made payable to Bethel Elementary PTA, 2306 Tyler Rd., Christiansburg, Va. 24073.

'Bowl For Kids' Sake' in Christiansburg

CHRISTIANSBURG - Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the New River Valley will hold a "Bowl For Kids' Sake" fund raiser on Mar. 23, from noon to 5 p.m., at Triangle Lanes in Christiansburg.

Special Olympics basketball tourney

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Special Olympics Southwest Region Basketball Tournament will be held on Sunday, Feb. 18, at Virginia Tech's Cassell Coliseum and Blacksburg Middle School. About 300 athletes representing 30 teams will compete.

Games and skills contests will begin at 9:45 a.m. Opening ceremonies will begin at 12:45 p.m., and games will continue until 5 p.m.

People who are interested in volunteering can register at Cassell Coliseum from 9 to 9:45 a.m. for the morning shift or from noon to 12:45 p.m. for the afternoon shift.
