Real estate seminar planned

BLACKSBURG - Raines Real Estate is sponsoring a seminar for first-time home buyers Feb. 27 and March 5 at the Blacksburg Marriott.

Conducting the seminar will be Joe Jones, principal broker for Raines; Dennis Duncan, a mortage banker with Chemical Mortgage Bank; Marshall Frank, a local real estate attorney; and Charles Tilson, from State Farm Insurance.

The seminar will cover options and procedures for first-time buyers, and will feature questions and answers in a relaxed atmosphere.

Quality control group to meet

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Radford/Roanoke section of the American Society for Quality Control will meet Feb. 20 at the Farmhouse Restaurant at 6 p.m.

The meeting will include a social hour, dinner and a program. Spouses are welcome.

Engineer added to staff

BLACKSBURG - Mills, Oliver & Webb, an architectural and engineering firm in Blacksburg, has added William A. Shelton to its professional staff.

Shelton received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Virginia Tech in 1992 and is scheduled to receive a master's degree in the field in December. At Mills, Oliver & Webb, Shelton will design water and sanitary sewer systems, storm water management systems, roadway and site grading.

Chamber members meet legislators

RADFORD - Members of the Radford Chamber of Commerce were in Richmond Jan. 30 and 31 to meet with legislators as part of an event sponsored by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and local chambers.

The Radford delegation met with local representatives, including Sen. Bo Trumbo, R-Fincastle and Del. Tommy Baker, R-Pulaski County. They talked about a wide range of issues, including funding for higher education and public schools; transportation; regional development; the business, professional and occupational license tax; urban partnerships and worker's compensations, said Jill Barr, economic development director for Radford.

Making the journey were Barr, William Merkt from Radford Community Hospital; Ervin Stauss from American Cable Entertainment; Richard Robertson, a retired Radford doctor; and Rosemary Middleton, director of the Radford chamber.

Chamber plans After Hours mixer

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Christiansburg-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce will have its February After Hours mixer Feb. 22 at 5:30 p.m. at Charley's Restaurant in the New River Valley Mall.

The mixer will have a Mardi Gras theme, and costumes are optional. Music will be provided by KOOL Country.
