DAVID WILSON SOURCE: From Associated Press reports =lo Pernell Whitaker, the World Boxing Council welterweight champion, was arrested and briefly jailed early Saturday after scuffling with three off-duty officers during a party held for the NBA's All-Star Weekend in San Antonio. Whitaker, 32, was booked on two misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and assaulting an officer. The Norfolk fighter was released at about 8 a.m. on two bonds of $800 each and an arraignment was set for March 4. He came away from the ruckus with a swollen mouth.
Al Ballew, a San Antonio police spokesman, said Whitaker and several others were blocking an exit at an All-Star Weekend event at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown San Antonio when they were told to move.
``The officers were trying to keep it [the exit] clear,'' Ballew said. ``I guess he just didn't want to do it.''
Pushes led to shoves and eventually to jabs as Whitaker and officer Javier Salazar fell to the ground and began wrestling, Ballew said.
``He continued to resist arrest and finally was placed in handcuffs,'' Ballew said. ``Then, several subjects began yelling who Whitaker was.''
Ballew said Salazar was transported to a local hospital after he reported feeling dizzy. He also was treated for a cut lower lip, then released, Ballew said.

Felix Trinidad, fighting for the first time as a headliner, stopped Rodney Moore after four rounds to retain his International Boxing Federation welterweight title in Las Vegas. It was the 24th knockout in 28 victories for the native of Puerto Rico, who successfully defended his 147-pound title for the eighth time. Moore is 37-10-2.
The fight topped a card that featured a woman, Christy Martin, in the semi-main event after heavyweight Tommy Morrison was suspended by Nevada boxing authorities for medical reasons a few hours before his bout with Arthur Weathers. It was the first time a women's fight had been shown on national television, with Showtime cable televising the bout.
The women's fight drew loud cheers from the crowd at the MGM Grand Hotel as the two women traded punches almost nonstop before Martin staggered Chase with a left hook that promoted referee Joe Cortez to stop the bout.
