TERRIERS WIN BIG ORANGE WITH 4 TITLISTS

Host William Byrd won a weather-delayed version of the Big Orange wrestling tournament, easily outdistancing second-place Northside.

Randall Sell (119 pounds), Lonnie Wade (130), Scott Minter (145) and Tim Boothe (215) won individual titles to lead the Terriers, who finished with 227 points. Northside, which finished with 159 points, was led by Brad Hungate. The 125-pounder won the Bob McLelland award as the meet's outstanding wrestler.

The Vikings were followed by Cave Spring (129 points), Staunton River (1251/2), William Fleming (1091/2), Martinsville (961/2), Covington (821/2) and Blacksburg (73).

In other news in the region:

For the second consecutive year, Franklin County finished second in the Group AAA dual wrestling tournament held at Atlee High School in Mechanicsville.

The Eagles, seeded sixth, knocked off third-seeded Herndon 40-20 in the first round, then beat seventh-seeded Mills Godwin 36-24 in a semifinal.

Great Bridge, which also won the tournament last year, downed Franklin County 66-0 in the championship match. The Eagles also received the USAir Sportsmanship award..

Lord Botetourt took the team title in The Knights Invitational wrestling tournament at James River High School in Buchanan.

The Cavaliers tallied 190 points, besting second-place Radford, which totalled 164.5. Floyd County (103) finished third, followed by James River (94.5), Alleghany (94), Shawsville (79.5) and Bath County (76).

Scott Lawler was 2-for-5 and drove in three runs and Jake Weber drove in four as North Carolina State (2-0) defeated VMI 11-3 in a baseball game in the Citgo Southern Challenge in Charleston, S.C.VMI (0-2) will face UNC Greensboro today at 10 a.m.

Ginny Johnson of Roanoke finished sixth in the 800-meter freestyle at the U.S. Swimming Nationals in Orlando, Fla. Brooke Bennett of Tampa, Fla., won the race in 8 minutes, 30.54 seconds. Johnson was clocked in 8:51.42.
