A yearlong effort by Newport News Shipbuilding and the area's congressional delegation has held off efforts to bump the shipyard from the submarine-building business.
``I'm glad the fight is over,'' said Rep. Herbert Bateman, R-Newport News, who helped create the final compromise plan signed into law Saturday by President Clinton.
The $265 billion authorization bill guarantees Newport News Shipbuilding a share of future submarine work. Clinton had sought to have future subs built at a competitor, Electric Boat in Groton, Conn.
Approval of the bill clears the way for Newport News to get $110 million this year to plan for a submarine it will begin building in 1999. The yard is in line for a second sub contract in 2001.
