JOHNSON 3RD AT SWIM MEET

Ginny Johnson of Roanoke finished third Sunday in the women's 1,500-meter freestyle event at the U.S. Swimming Nationals in Orlando, Fla.

Johnson had a time of 16 minutes, 50.14 seconds.

Brooke Bennett of Tampa, Fla., won the event with a time of 16:37.94.

Tim Giles hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning to lift UNC Greensboro over VMI 6-5 in the Citgo Southern Challenge in Charleston, S.C.

Giles went 2-for-2 with three RBI to lead the Spartans (2-1). W.G. Smith (0-1) pitched a complete game in the losing effort for VMI (0-3), striking out four and walking seven.
