KIDS' VALENTINES SHOW WHO'S SPECIAL TO THEM

More than 100 elementary school pupils in the New River Valley sent Valentines to The Roanoke Times, writing about their special Valentine and drawing pictures. From best friends, to grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters and pets, the kids had many reasons why someone was so special to them.

Courtney Boardman, a 1st-grader at Gilbert Linkous Elementary, said her Valentine was for her family because she loves them. Chris McNeil of Shawsville Elementary says his mom and dad are his Valentine.

Sean Surface's Valentine is he's cat Z.B. who "rubs on the side of my leg. She makes me happy. I wish a happy Valentine's to a cat like Z.B."

Megan Eller of Bethel Elementary writes that her hamster, Amy, is her Valentine.

Many kids said they chose their best friend as their Valentine because they very nice to them and always there, or because they didn't fight with each other. Some have known their best friend since kindergarten or are in the same class.

"[Audrey] is the best, best, best, best friend. She is always there for me. She is a real buddy, she is like a sister to me. She is the best," writes Gloria Tuckwiller of Eastern Elementary.

"Derek is my best friend. Derek is cool. He plays on my basketball team. He is my buddy," writes Geoff Moench of Prices Fork Elementary.

Some wrote poems about their friends, family, pets and teachers.

Others wanted to give Valentines to their favorite sports player.

Cory Price of Kipps Elementary wants to give his Valentine to Shawn Smith of the Virginia Tech men's basketball team because, "he's there when I need him."

Dustin Lucas of Eastern Elementary wanted his Valentine to go to his friend who is a fan of the Dallas Cowboys - he drew a picture of the Cowboys at the Super Bowl.

We selected the following Valentine drawings as the best of the best, however, every drawing we received was great.

Valentine to her best friend "because she is a nice person. And we

have been best friends for a long time. And I would give anything

for her. Because we're best friends. And we will always be best

friends until we die." 3. Sean Surface, a second-grader at Prices
