Salem held a 28-point halftime advantage and never looked back as it remained in front in the Blue Ridge District race and blew past Rockbridge County 80-55 on Tuesday night at the Spartans' gym.
Herschel Thomas scored 14 points in the first half to lead Salem (12-7 overall, 8-1 district). He finished with 20 points to lead all scorers. Eric Grinnell had 15 points and Kwam Lewis added 11.
Luke Serber led Rockbridge County (4-12, 3-5) with 16 points.
Carlisle 73, Roanoke Valley Christian 71: Joseph McClinton sank a shot at the buzzer to lift the Chiefs over the Eagles as Carlisle clinched the Virginia Independent Conference championship with a victory in Martinsville.
The Chiefs led 32-27 at halftime, but RVC was up by four with two minutes to play. Bryant Redd hit two 3-pointers to give the Chiefs the lead. Redd later hit one free throw to tie it at 71.
With 18 seconds left, the Eagles missed two free throws, Carlisle rebounded, went downcourt and McClinton converted a miss by teammate Lamont Franklin.
Bryant Redd had a game-high 25 points and McClinton added 23 for Carlisle (15-1, 12-0).
Joel Nester scored 15 points and Eric Johnson had 15 points and six assists for RVC (15-5, 9-3).
Lord Botetourt 52, William Byrd 51: The Cavaliers pulled off a Blue Ridge District upset in Daleville, holding off a late rally by a Terriers team playing without Chris Childress, Byrd's leading scorer, who was out with a sprained ankle.
Lord Botetourt (5-12, 2-7) led by nine points with 2:56 to play before William Byrd (12-6, 3-5) mounted a comeback sparked by Mayo Wilson's 3-pointer.
With 17 seconds to play, Jesse Powell gave the Cavaliers a 52-48 lead with two free throws. Frank English canned a 3-pointer for the Terriers with five seconds left, but William Byrd threw a long inbounds pass and ran out the clock.
Sean Osborne led Lord Botetourt with 14 points and Jason Hunt had 11.
Patrick Henry 69, Franklin County 56: Boo Battle scored 10 of his team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Patriots (11-8, 5-2) held off the Eagles (3-16, 1-6) in a Roanoke Valley District game in Rocky Mount.
Northside 78, Alleghany 62: Xavier Lee scored a game-high 25 points as the Vikings (12-6, 8-1) downed the Mountaineers (3-15, 2-7) in a Blue Ridge District game in Low Moor.
North Cross 55, Lynchburg Christian 43: The Raiders held the Bulldogs to one field goal in the third quarter to pull away and win a Virginia Independent Conference game at North Cross' gym.
Brian Whitaker scored seven points in a 17-3 third-quarter run for the Raiders (2-14, 2-9). He finished with 15. William Watkins had 16 points and seven assists.
Roanoke Catholic 75, Timberlake Christian 38: The Celtics avenged a 59-58 home loss this season with a 37-point pounding of Timberlake Christian in a VIC game in Lynchburg.
Roanoke Catholic (5-12, 4-7) hit seven of nine 3-point attempts in the first half. Brendan McCarthy led the Celtics with 24 points, hitting six beyond the arc.
Jason Spear led Timberlake with 12 points.
Parry McCluer 86, Craig County 24: The Fighting Blues (12-5, 5-5) hit hard and fast as they ran away from the Rockets (2-11, 0-9) in Buena Vista.
Girls
Cave Spring 55, Patrick Henry 27: For the second time in as many nights, a Knights player scored her 1,000th point. This time Cave Spring overcame a sluggish start to pound the visiting Patriots in a Roanoke Valley District game.
Cheryl Rhodes sank a jumper from just inside the 3-point arc to reach her milestone. Monday night, Jaclyn Banks scored her 1,000th point in key victory over Pulaski County.
Rhodes led Cave Spring (11-6, 8-2), which was playing for the fourth time in five days, with 11 points.
Carrie Moore was the high scorer for Patrick Henry (1-15, 1-9) with nine points.
Roanoke Valley Christian 62, Stuart Hall 29: Rebecca Bryant scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Eagles downed the Tigers in a Blue Ridge Conference game at Roanoke Valley Christian.
Roanoke Valley Christian 71, Carlisle 31: The Eagles (15-2, 10-1) were even better the second time around as they downed the Chiefs (2-11, 1-9) in a Blue Ridge Conference matchup. Roanoke Valley Christian, which earlier in the day beat Stuart Hall 62-29, got 27 points and seven steals from Gina Guthrie in the nightcap.
Lynchburg Christian 39, North Cross 26: Shannon Carroll scored 11 points to lead the Bulldogs (12-8, 9-2) past the Raiders (5-10, 5-6) in a Blue Ridge Conference matchup at North Cross.
Roanoke Catholic 40, Hargrave Military 9: Christy Hinman scored 11 points, grabbed six rebounds and had seven steals to lead the Celtics (9-8, 8-5) to a rout of the Tigers (0-15, 0-10) in a Virginia Independent Conference game in Chatham.
