WOODS SET TO HELP COACH OLYMPIC TEAM

Jeff Woods, a member of the Radford University coaching staff since 1986, has been named an assistant coach for the U.S. men's field hockey team for the Summer Olympic Games.

Woods, who will be part of a four-man coaching staff, will be responsible for coaching on the field, analyzing videotape and acting as team intermediary with the technical tables during international matches.

Woods, who has worked with Radford's volleyball, softball and field hockey staffs, has been a field hockey coach at five U.S. Olympic Festivals.

In other sports in the region:

Nearly 1,400 youth players will participate in the First Union Indoor Classic Soccer Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

The players, representing 134 teams and ranging in age from 8 to 18, will gather at the Carter Athletic Center, the Armory Reserve Building and the Roanoke College Alumni Gym. All games are free and open to the public.
