BLUE DEVILS END LOSING STREAK

Brian McDonnell scored a game-high 13 points as Grayson County beat Bland 49-37 in a Mountain Empire District contest at Bland Wednesday night to snap a two-game losing streak.

McDonnell scored seven of the Blue Devils' 22 first-half points as Grayson County (17-2, 7-2) jumped out to a five-point lead. Chad Shaffner scored 10 of his 12 in the second half to put away the Rockets.

Bland was led by Lee Meadows, who scored 12.

Tygart's Valley (W.Va.) 62, Highland 59: Courtney Elder scored 12 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as Tygart's Valley rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to knock off the Rams in a non-district game in Monterey.

Chad McCauley led Tygart's Valley with 18 points.

Highland was led by Timmy Harold, who scored a game-high 19 points.

George Wythe 95, Northwood 53: Thad Umberger scored 15 points and Brian Barnes added 14 as the Maroons kept the Panthers winless in a Hogoheegee District game at Saltville.

Tim Nutter had 11 points for Northwood (0-19, 0-15) and David Colley added 10.

Narrows 56, Galax 48: Joe Shipbaugh scored 18 points and hit three of four free throws down the stretch to seal the Green Wave's Mountain Empire District victory over the Maroon Tide in Narrows.

Robbie Stafford had 16 points and Bryan Pruett added 12 for the Green Wave (6-11, 3-6).

Ken Houtz led Galax with 13 points and Jeff Ross had 12.

Floyd County 79, Auburn 41: Travis Cantrell scored a game-high 19 points to lead a balanced Floyd County attack as the Buffaloes rolled past Auburn in a Three Rivers District game in Riner.

Auburn was led by Kenny Wojciechowski, who scored 14.

Girls

Franklin County 61, Patrick Henry 45: Jenny Chitwood scored 15 points to lead four scorers in double figures as the Eagles knocked off the Patriots in a Roanoke Valley District game in Rocky Mount..

Patrick Henry was led by Carrie Moore, who pumped in a game-high 25 points.

Tuesday's games

s 8.5Bassett 79, Patrick County 77: Keith Harvey hit a 3-pointer to tie the score in regulation and then nailed a jumper at the buzzer in overtime to lift Bassett past Patrick County in a Piedmont District game in Stuart.

Harvey, who scored 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, hit his 3-pointer after the Cougars' Ray Hylton hit 1 of 2 free throws to give Patrick County a 69-66 lead. Both teams had chances to win in regulation, but Patrick County turned the ball over on its next possession and Bassett missed a shot at the buzzer.

In overtime, Hylton, who had 15, missed a shot to give the Cougars the lead with seven seconds left and Bassett pushed the ball up for Harvey's winning jumper.

DeVone Claybrooks led the Bengals (9-8, 9-6) with 25 points.

Patrick County (9-7, 7-7) was led by Jason Wood, who scored 21.

Fieldale-Collinsville 59, Chatham 37: Fieldale-Collinsville (14-2, 14-1) took control in the first half and cruised to an easy 22-point victory in the Piedmont District game in Collinsville.

Gretna 57, Laurel Park 53: In Gretna, Brian Robertson made four 3-pointers and scored 17 points as the Hawks edged the Lancers in a Piedmont District matchup.

Rondae Hall and Jason Tucker added 16 and 15 points, respectively for Gretna (9-8, 7-7). Rashad Wall led Laurel Park (7-9, 7-8) with 17 points and Corey Flood added 16.

Bland 60, Narrows 45: Andy Selfe scored 15 points in the second half and the Rockets held the Green Wave to four points in the third quarter to break open a close Mountain Empire District game in Bland.

Selfe, a 6-foot-6 center, finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds for Bland (7-8, 3-4).

Bryan Pruett scored 19 for Narrows (5-11, 2-6).

Covington Boys' Home 54, Meadow Bridge (W.Va.) 41: The Indians' Nebiyu Naod scored a season-high 20 points and had five assists and four steals to spark a victory for Boys' Home (11-12) in Covington.
