Water service should be restored this morning to South Roanoke residents who awoke Thursday to low pressure or no water, city officials said.
A 12-inch water main broke on Jefferson Street near Roanoke Memorial Hospital, affecting most of the homes and businesses in South Roanoke. Jefferson Street was closed between Flannagan Drive and McClanahan Street while the line was repaired.
City spokeswoman Michelle Bono said the water is safe to drink today, though it may not look exactly right. "Citizens may experience a look of milkiness in the water, which is just air in the system," she said.
Residents who get brownish water, caused by iron deposits stirred up by pressure changes in the repaired line, should put off doing laundry, because the water could stain clothing, officials said.
