Volunteers needed
PULASKI - The Court Services Home Confinement Program needs volunteers to monitor Montgomery County and Radford youth via phone calls and home visits. The program provides an alternative to sending young people to detention facilities. The Mentorship Program also needs volunteers to develop a one-on-one relationship with a youth.

Self-esteem program
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Mental Health Association of the New River Valley is recruiting volunteers to present "I'm Thumbody," a self-esteem program for third graders in Montgomery and Giles County.
A two-hour training session will be held on Thursday, Feb. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the New River Valley Mall Community Room.

Grants awarded
BLACKSBURG - The Department of Philosophy and the Community Design Assistance Center at Virginia Tech have received two grants from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), U.S. Department of Education.
The philosophy department received a three year grant of $97,000 to develop classes using stand-alone instructional software and the World Wide Web to improve the effectiveness of individualized instruction.
The Community Design Assistance Center will use the grant for a program in which university teams will be paired with area high school students to design and implement community-improvement projects.

Arts and crafts fair
BLACKSBURG - The Brush Mountain Arts and Crafts Fair will be held from Friday, March 29 through Sunday, March 31 at the Rector Fieldhouse at Virginia Tech. The fair is sponsored by the Voluntary Action Center of Montgomery County. The group has created a database of local musicians. The database will be a source for locating entertainment for the fair and for future events

Board member sought
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Board of Supervisors of Montgomery County will be making an appointment to the Office On Youth Advisory Board. The board examines delinquency issues including juvenile crime and drug offenses and develops programs with other agencies to work with families of troubled youth. Programs include mentoring, work programs for first-time juvenile offenders, and alcohol or other drug use prevention programs. Meetings are every third Monday at 7 p.m., in the Montgomery County Courthouse.
County residents who are registered voters in good tax standing are eligible. Submit a letter of intent to Betty S. Thomas, County Administrator, P.O. Box 806, Christiansburg 24073-0806 by Wednesday, March 6.
