The Roanoke Valley Choral Society and the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra have sung and played themselves onto national radio this month.

In connection with Black History Month, Chorus America's ``The First Art'' radio series will feature a recording of ``African Sanctus,'' which the choral society and orchestra made during a performance last year. ``The First Art'' is aired on 238 public radio stations nationwide. Roanoke's WVTF (89.1 FM) does not carry the series.

``African Sanctus'' was composed by David Fanshawe, who traveled throughout Africa recording indigenous music. His idea was to combine African rhythms and melodies with the ancient text of the Latin Mass.

The symphony was accompanied for the performance by Professor Al Wojtera and the Radford University Percussion Ensemble.
