ADRIANCE, Thomas James, 58, of Blacksburg, passed away Thursday, February 15, 1996. A graduate of Dartmouth College and Columbia University, he was employed as a history professor at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, and previously had served as chairman of the history department. Mr. Adriance was a member of Roanoke Valley Presbyterian Church in Blacksburg. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, John C. Jr. and Judith Adriance of Clearwater, Fla., several nieces and nephews, and a close friend, Bruce Davis of Radford. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 1996, at Hickman Cemetery in Pulaski County, with the Rev. Charles L. Taylor officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. There will be no visitation. HOPKINS, Mercelene Adkins, 69, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, February 15, 1996. She was born in Franklin Co. to the late William D. and Bessie Saunders Adkins. Survivors include three sons, Howard A. (Cheryl) Hopkins, Harvey, Ill., Norris C. Hopkins and Morton Hopkins II both of Roanoke; one daughter, Rochelle Hopkins, Roanoke; five grandchildren, Marcia, Amanda, Shanelle, Lushaun and Thequitta; a host of other relatives and friends. JOHNSON, Mavis Lorene Worley, 72, wife of Samuel Franklin Johnson, of Route 5, Box 83-H, Staunton, died at 1:10 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 1996, at her residence. She was born on April 3, 1923, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late William Myers and Stella Frances Branch Worley. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Linden Heights Baptist Church, where she thoroughly enjoyed participating in church work and activities. Visiting shut-ins and folks in nursing homes brought her much pleasure. She was a member of the 23'rs Club, the Baptist Women's on Mission, and the Ruth Sunday School Class. In addition to her husband, whom she married on May 20, 1939, survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Samuel W. and Joanne Johnson of Waynesboro, and Jimmy R. and Nettie Johnson of Kinston, N.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy J. and Wilson Pitchford of Staunton, and Paula J. and Loren Almond of Pawleys Island, S.C.; two brothers, John Myers Worley of Natural Bridge and Larry Wilson Worley of Raphine; three sisters, Gilberetta Wanita Carter of Greenville, Nellie Frances Hill of Natural Bridge Station and Connie Beulah Coleman of Natural Bridge; six grandchildren, Theresa J. Layne, Kevin Brent Pitchford, Tracey J. Collins, Samuel Todd Johnson, Stacy Gardner Johnson and Emily Caroline Almond; two great-grandchildren, Daniel Paul Layne and Matthew Steven Layne, and several nieces and nephews. A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 1996, at Linden Heights Baptist Church by the Rev. David A. Anderson and the Rev. Edward Richardson. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be nephews Steven Carter, Daniel Carter, Philip Carter, Darnell Hill, Terry Worley, Wesley Worley, Robert Coleman and Jason Coleman. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Ruth Sunday School Class, Baptist Women's on Mission and the Deacon Board. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Monday at Henry Funeral Home, and those desiring may call at the residence or during the day at the funeral home. PUCKETT, Nettie B., 84, of Wytheville, died Friday, February 16, 1996 in the Birdmont Health Care Center. She was the widow of Woodson Puckett and was a member of the Mt. Pleasant United M ethodist Church. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, W. Eugene and Clara Puckett, Cumming, Ga., Glenn H. and Mable Puckett, Wytheville; two sisters, Ruth Blessing, Wytheville, Mary Jane Dillard, Amelia, Va.; one brother, Wilford Burnette, Laurel Fork, Va.; 10 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and 3 step grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be Monday, February 19, 1996 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dale Wyrick with the interment to follow in the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Grubb Funeral Home Sunday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Grubb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

RUTTER, Vera Williams, 83, of Collinsville and formerly of Floyd, passed away in a Montgomery Co. Hospital Friday, February 16, 1996. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Shirley Rutter; and two brothers, Cecil Bower & J. T. Bower. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Arnold Naff, Pilot; one son and daughter-in-law, James (Jim) and Dorothy Rutter, Floyd; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Beatrice and Robert Howery, Annandale, Rosie and Freeman Pratt, Salem; one brother and sister-in-law, David and Christine Bower, Floyd; thirteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 20, 1996 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens Chapel, Christiansburg, Va. with the Rev. Donald Peters officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg, Va. with grandsons serving as Pallbearers. SALMON, Richard Earl, Sr., 5 9, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 16, 1996. He was an employee of Merita Bakery. Mr. Salmon was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. W. B. and Lillie L. Salmon, and three brothers, James T. Salmon, Charles E. Salmon Sr. and the Rev. Robert Salmon. Surviving are his wife, Bettie Fleenor Salmon; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard E. Jr. and Wanda Salmon, and James Mark and Joyce Salmon of Roanoke; two brothers, Shirley Eugene (Anne) Salmon and the Rev. Daniel R. (Judy) Salmon of King, N.C.; five sisters, Margaret Everett of Wilmington, N.C., Doris (Raymond) Lawson and Ruth (Marvin) Mitchell of Winston-Salem, N.C., Ruby Whitt of Plantation, Fla., and Rebecca (Hammond) Williams of Roanoke; one uncle, J. Oaty LaPrade of Walkertown, N.C., and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at Lotz Roanoke Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday, February 19, 1996, with Dr. Charles Fuller, the Rev. SHEARER, Ruth P., 72, of Charleston, W. Va., died Thursday, February 15, 1996, at Charleston Area Medical Center, General Division after a short illness. Mrs. Shearer was a homemaker and a resident of Kanawha Valley since 1967, originally from Salem, Virginia. She was a graduate of Southern Seminary, Beuna Vista, Va. with a degree in Music. She was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Charleston, and had been a volunteer at Memorial Hospital, Charleston. She is survived by her husband, William N. Shearer, Jr., of Charleston; her daughter, Stephanie Shearer Timm, Dunwoody, Ga.; a son, William N. Shearer, III., Charleston; and four grandchildren. Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, February 19, 1996 at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Charleston, with the Rev. Pete Turner officiating, with interment private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 36 Norwood Road, Charleston, W. Va. 25314. Arrangements are being handled by Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, W.Va.

SONGER, John Donald, 57, of Blacksburg, died Saturday morning, February 17, 1996 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born in Newport, Va. on February 11, 1939, he was a son of the late Frank M. Songer Sr. and Amanda Sanders Songe r. As a young man he became a member of the Oak View Christian Church at Newport. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Magdaline Sarver and two brothers, Bobby Songer and Frank M. Songer Jr. He is survived by one son; three daughters; eight grandchildren; one brother, Andrew Songer of Blacksburg; five sisters, Maude Lytton, Mildred Williams, and Anna Mae King of Blacksburg, Ruth Ratcliff and Alma Conoyer of Missouri. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke in conjuction with the services for his brother, Frank Jr. Burial will be in the Lucas Family Cemetery, Newport. The family received friends at the Kendall Funeral Home Saturday evening.

SPICKARD, Lois Jane, 77, formerly of Blue Ridge, passed away Saturday, February 17, 1996, at the Sun Haven Adult Home. She was a retired school teacher and taught at Colonial Elementary School in Blue Ridge for 37 years. Lois was the daughter of the late Frank Samuel and Carrie Fuqua Spickard. She was predeceased by two brothers, Frank S. Spickard and Walter D. Spickard. She was a faithful member of the Glade Creek Lutheran Church, having served in the choir and played the organ. She was a member since childhood. Surviving are a foster brother and wife, Dale N. and Sarah Spickard of Blue Ridge, also many special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 19, 1996, from the Glade Creek Lutheran Church in Blue Ridge, with the Rev. Robert J. Maier officiating. Burial will follow in Glade Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Lotz Vinton Chapel.

UNDERWOOD, Jackie Dean, 40, of Ferrum, Va. went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 16, 1996. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eliza Willie Underwood; and a brother, Elton Landon Underwood. Surviving are his wife, Linda H. Underwood; his daughter, Jacqueline Nichole Underwood, both of the home; his father, Elton Lawrence Underwood, Rocky Mount; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Ellen and Danny Bobbitt, Salem, Ola and Arnold Martin, Ferrum, Sylvia and Bill Hodges, Penhook, Donna and Clayton Ware, Rocky Mount; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy and Mary Underwood, Alexandria, Jimmie and Darlene Underwood, Ferrum; his father-in-law and wife, Guy J. and Dorothy Holley, Rocky Mount; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ronald and Phyllis Holley, Rocky Mount, Sam and Deborah Trail, Ferrum, Cecil Mason, Rocky Mount. WRIGHT, Norman Thomas, Sr., 61, of Boones Mill died Thursday, February 15, 1996. He was the owner of Norman's Crescent Heights Grocery & Tire in Roanoke, from 1966 until he retired in 1993. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Flora Wright; his parents, Isaac Stoner and Sarah Guthrie Wright; and a sister, Hortense Nyce. Surviving are his wife, Lois Edwards Wright; three sons and two daughters-in-laws, Tom and Carol Wright; Jay Wright, David and Lori Wright; four grandchildren, Adam, Ashley, Matthew and Cody Wright, all of Boones Mill; six sisters and three brothers-in-law, Mildred and William Bieger, Clydie Gulliams, Blanche and Clarence Hicks, Beulah and Thurston Eatman, Beatrice Ware, and Betty Jane Dowell; four brothers and three sisters-in-laws, Cecil and Muriel Wright, George Wright, Leroy and Ruth Wright, Frank and Romona Wright. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 18, 1996 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel. The funeral will be conducted at Oakey's South Chapel by the Rev. Gary Hoffman on Monday, February 19, 1996 at 2:00 p.m. with burial to follow at Franklin Memorial Park. Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Avenue is in charge of arrangements.
