New AEP manager named for district

CHRISTIANSBURG - Ted E. Aaron has been named Christiansburg district manager within American Electric Power's Southwestern Virginia/Tennessee region, with responsibilities for customer service and operations in Floyd and Montgomery counties.

A Kentucky native, Aaron holds an associate degree in business administration from New River Community College and a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Tennessee Tech University. He joined Appalachian Power Co., now American Electric, as a commercial engineer in the Pulaski Division in 1980, was promoted to electrical engineer in 1983, and senior engineer in 1989.

He was named Christiansburg line crew supervisor in 1990, and Christiansburg area superintendent in 1992.

Tour DuPont booths offered by chamber

BLACKSBURG - April 1 is the deadline for businesses to reserve booths at the downtown festivities that will occur when the Tour DuPont rides through Blacksburg May 6.

As part of the bicycle race, the Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce will sponsor its Tour Downtown from noon to 7:30 p.m. on College Avenue and Draper Road. It will feature live music and entertainment, business booths, food and other events.

Booth space is 10 feet deep by 16 feet wide. The fee is $50.

Businesses that have locations within the festival area can reserve space in front of their stores. Businesses that have locations outside the festival area can also reserve space.

Vacations, car offered in chamber auction

RADFORD - The Radford Chamber of Commerce will have everything from a car to a diamond bracelet up for purchase at its fund-raising auction Saturday from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the Norwood Room.

Among the items for auction are a Geo Metro Coupe, donated by Harvey's Chevrolet, and a weekend in a suite at the Homestead resort.

Also available will be a 14-carat diamond and blue sapphire bracelet, donated by P.R. Sturgill; a Canon fax machine, donated by Layne's Copy Products; and a Wellness Center membership, donated by Radford Community Hospital.

Other items include Marriott resort hotel packages; two round-trip USAir tickets to anywhere in the United States, donated by Christian Travel Inc.; two tickets to a Washington Bullets game, donated by American Cable Entertainment; a man's suit, donated by Garrett's in Radford; beach packages; art works; and others.

Also featured at the fund-raiser will be a hoola-hoop contest and dancing to 1950s music. The cost is $25 per person, and reservations are required. Call the chamber at 639-2202.

Hoechst Celanese wins supplier award

NARROWS - Hoechst Celanese's Narrows plant has received a Distinguished Supplier Award from Milliken and Co., a textile firm, for its cellulose acetate fibers.

Fewer than 1 percent of Milliken's suppliers receive the award, and the Narrows site was the only Hoechst plant in the world to receive it. Milliken gave the award because of the quality of fibers and service from the Narrows plant and other factors, including full use of electronic data interchange, 99 percent on-time delivery, and involvement in at least one cost-reduction project.

Three local people pass CPA examination

BLACKSBURG - Three area residents are among 485 people to pass the Uniform Certified Public Accountant examination, given by the Virginia State Board for Accountancy in November.

More than 2,000 people took the three-day test. Among those passing were Susan E. Kruck and Angela C. Perkins of Blacksburg, and Allen W. Thompson of Floyd.

Purchasing agents to hear talk on writing

BLACKSBURG - The New River Valley chapter of the National Association of Purchasing Management will meet Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. in the Blacksburg Holiday Inn.

The topic will be "Making Your Professional Messages Reader-Friendly," by Simone Poirier-Bures, an English instructor at Virginia Tech and novelist. The cost is $11 per person, which includes dinner.

Business women to meet Tuesday

BLACKSBURG - The New River Chapter of the American Business Women's Association will meet at the Blacksburg Holiday Inn Tuesday with a social and dinner beginning at 6:45 p.m. and program at 8 p.m.

Speaking will be Rosemary Goss, a professor at Virginia Tech, who will talk about housing trends in the 1990s.

Local dentist addresses group

BLACKSBURG - John Gregg, a Blacksburg dentist, recently gave a speech on "Evaluation and Microsurgical Repair of Sensory Nerve Injuries," at the Carolinas Medical Center Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
