BRIDGEWATER NEEDS 2OT TO NIP WASPS

Craig Tutt scored seven of his 20 points in the second overtime as Bridgewater nipped Emory & Henry 91-86 in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament at the Salem Civic Center on Saturday.

Tutt, an All-ODAC first-teamer, and the third-seeded Eagles advanced to a semifinal meeting with Randolph-Macon today at 4 p.m.

The teams had gone into two overtimes in their last meeting, a 114-112 Wasps victory decided by Pulaski High graduate Kevin Alexander's 55-footer at the buzzer.

Scott Powers scored 22 points to lead Bridgewater (17-8). Former Floyd County High School standout Jason Light had a game-high 25 for the Wasps.

Light hit one of two free throws to put the No.6 Wasps (14-11) up 67-64 with 45.1 seconds left in regulation, but Eagles senior guard Jered Hoover drilled a 3-pointer with :27 left to tie it. Emory & Henry's Alexander tried to get it to Dytanyon Norman with four seconds left, but Chad Sowers blocked his shot and it went to the first overtime at 67-67.

Powers made two free throws to deadlock it at 75-75 with :23.5 on the clock and force the second extra period. Bridgewater got its first lead with 11:05 left in the second half on a Sowers layup.

In other games:

No.4 Hampden-Sydney 80, No.5 Virginia Wesleyan 68: One of the ODAC's best inside-outside tandems hit the Marlins from all sides to lift the Tigers into the semifinals.

Hampden-Sydney's Nate Schwab had 27 points and fellow senior Ryan Odom hit four of eight 3-pointers for 16 points as the Tigers drowned the Marlins.

Fourth-seeded Hampden-Sydney (17-8) will face top-seeded Roanoke at 2 p.m. today. The Tigers have won nine of their past 10 games.

Junior guard Elson Devan gave the Tigers a 14-13 lead with 12:36 left in the first half and they never trailed again. Schwab and Odom were named to the All-ODAC second team on Friday.

Salem High School graduate Kevin Garst added seven points and a team-high four assists for the Tigers.

No.5 seed Virginia Wesleyan (14-10) was led by James MacLeod's 17 points.

The victory set up another meeting of what has become the ODAC's fiercest rivalry - Hampden-Sydney against Roanoke. The defending tournament champion Tigers have won three of the past four matchups with the Maroons.

``To win the championship, we figured we would have to go through them,'' Tigers coach Tony Shaver said. ``One thing we've clearly got to do a better job of is rebounding. We were sort of manhandled tonight inside.''

No.2 Randolph-Macon 72, No.7 Lynchburg 65: Hornets coach Joe Davis told his players before the game to beware of the usual suspects: Kurt Axe, Nathan Davis and Brad Shanfelt. But he also added another name: freshman Mike LaGuardia.

LaGuardia scored a career-high 24 points (18 in the second half) on 6-of-9 3-point shooting as the Yellow Jackets (18-7) topped Lynchburg.

Otis Tucker III shot bull's eyes for Lynchburg (10-15), scoring 37 points, the fourth-highest single-game total in tournament history. Tucker, a 26-year-old junior and Army veteran, will be the subject of an upcoming feature on ESPN's SportsCenter.

Former Patrick Henry High School standout Turk Smith had five points and three rebounds in his final game for the Hornets.
