KNIGHTS RIP COUGARS 66-46

Jeff Lang scored 18 points and had eight assists to lead Cave Spring to a 66-46 Roanoke Valley District victory over Pulaski County on Saturday at the Knights' gym.

Cave Spring (11-10 overall, 5-3 district) knocked down 12 3-pointers, including five in the first quarter.

Pulaski County (5-15, 0-8) started out in a zone defense that allowed the Knights to open up a 16-point lead after one quarter.

Cave Spring's Chris Johnston had 10 points, including two 3-pointers and nine rebounds.

Pulaski was without Jamar McNair who was out with a sprained ankle. Ron Branch led the Cougars with 14 points.

Galax 66, Rocky Gap 63: The Maroon Tide worked two overtimes to defeat the Eagles in a Mountain Empire District game in Rocky Gap.

Nate Noel had nine points in the fourth to keep Galax (8-10, 4-5) in the game. Noel finished with 21 points. Will Dotson nailed a 3-pointer with one second left in the first overtime to send the game into the second OT.

Dotson finished with 20 points for Rocky Gap (8-11, 6-4).

Nathan Blessing had 21 points for the Eagles. Ken Houtz tallied 15 points for the Maroon Tide.

Radford 52, Auburn 49: John Robertson scored 16 points and the Bobcats repelled a late Eagles' rally to win a Three Rivers District game in Riner.

Auburn's David Alderman hit both of his 3-pointers with less than a minute remaining to pull the Eagles to 51-49. But Andrew Crowder sank one of two free throws to give the Bobcats the win.

Auburn missed a 3-pointer to tie the score with nine seconds remaining.

Crowder finished with nine points for Radford. Kenny Wojciechowski paced the Eagles with 22 points and Alderman finished with 10.

The Eagles scored just four points in the third quarter when both teams went cold from the floor.

Floyd County 79, Shawsville 41: The Buffaloes scored big in the second half to open a tight game with the Shawnees in the Three Rivers District game in Shawsville.

Jason Dalton led Floyd (17-2, 8-0) with 25 points, 15 in the third quarter. Barnett Carr led Shawsville (2-16, 1-7) with 10 points.

Salem 46, Lord Botetourt 29: Herschel Thomas scored 12 points and Kwam Lewis added seven points and seven rebounds as the Spartans wrapped up their regular season with a Blue Ridge District win over the Cavaliers in Daleville.

Salem will play Northside on Tuesday night at Lord Botetourt in a playoff game for the district title. Both teams are 9-1 in the district.

Michael Gates paced Lord Botetourt (5-13, 2-8) with eight points and 10 rebounds, while twins Michael and Robert Pauley combined for nine points.

William Byrd 53, Alleghany 41: The Terriers jumped out to an early lead and coasted to a 12-point win over the Mountaineers in the Blue Ridge District game in Vinton.

William Byrd (14-6, 5-5) was led by Chris Childress' 18 points and seven rebounds.

Alleghany was led by Jay Megginson's 12 points.

The Terriers will take on Lord Botetourt in the first round of the district tournament on Tuesday at the Salem Civic Center.

Bath County 56, Covington 44: The Chargers defeated the Cougars for the second time in 48 hours with a 12-point win in the Pioneer District game in Covington.

Bath County (14-3, 7-3) defeated Covington (12-8, 9-3) 70-54 on Thursday night in Hot Springs. Matt Williams was the high man for Bath with 13 points. Mike Barber led the Cougars with 13 points.

Northside 69, Rockbridge County 49: Justin Porterfield scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half as the Vikings forced a playoff game with Salem for the Blue Ridge District title with a win over the Wildcats.

Rockbridge County led 30-29 at the half, but Northside (13-6, 9-1) outscored the Wildcats 18-6 in the third quarter.

Ben Peete added 19 points for the Vikings, and Adam Wimmer added 12.

George Pickral led the Wildcats with 13 points and Ricky Wright scored 11.

Highland 61, Parry McCluer 57: The Rams overcame a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the Fighting Blues in a Pioneer District game in Buena Vista.

Timmy Harold led Highland with 21 points and teammate Jay Hall added 12. Parry McCluer was led by Boo Rowsey's 17 points and David Downs' 15.

Girls

Cave Spring 51, William Fleming 32: The Knights got a big fourth quarter from Cheryl Rhodes, who scored 12 of her 14 points in the period to help Cave Spring pull away from the Colonels in a Roanoke Valley District game at the Knights gym.

Cave Spring was led by Jaclyn Banks with 19 points. Revonda Barber led William Fleming with nine points.

Pulaski County 72, Franklin County 52: The Cougars got off to a slow start but pulled away for the 20-point Roanoke Valley District win over the Eagles in Dublin.

Pulaski County remained in the district lead with the win. Franklin County was 14-of-30 from the free-throw line.

Katrina Williams led the Cougars with 14 points. Penny Clayborne led the Eagles with 21 points.
