NARROWS WINS MED CROWN IN VOLLEYBALL

Top-seeded Narrows defeated Grayson County 8-15, 15-6, 15-9 to win the Mountain Empire District volleyball championship on Saturday.

The Green Wave advances to the Region C tournament and will play Giles on Thursday in Pearisburg. The Blue Devils travel to Riner on Thursday to take on Auburn.

In other news around the region:

* E.C. Glass swept the boys and girls divisions at the Northwest Region swim meet in Lynchburg.

The boys team tallied 158 points in beating Heritage by 59 points for the team title. The girls team totaled 156 points, besting Cave Spring by 15 points for first place.

* Hargrave Military captured six individual titles in winning the Virginia Independent Conference tournament wrestling title in Chatham.

Hargrave had 190 points, with Lynchburg Christian finishing second with 179.5. North Cross was third with 105 and Covenant was fourth with 57 points.

Daniel Cho of North Cross, who won the 152-pound title, was chosen the most outstanding wrestler. The top three wrestlers in each weight division advance to the private school state championships next weekend at Cape Henry Collegiate in Virginia Beach.

* Glenvar defeated Parry McCluer in the Pioneer District volleyball championship 11-15, 15-8, 15-5.

The Highlanders host Northwood in the Region C tournament on Thursday and Parry McCluer travels to Wytheville to take on George Wythe.

* James River captured the team title in the Pioneer District wrestling tournament, winning five individual titles.

Jason Cuddy won the 103-pound weight class, Shawn Brown won at 125, Seth Bowles won at 152, Kevin Camp won at 160 and Billy Jo Carter won at 189. Glenvar finished second with 151.5 points, Covington third at 134.5, Bath County fourth at 129 and Parry McCluer last at 109.

* William Byrd ran away with the Blue Ridge District tournament wrestling crown, besting second place Northside by 58 points.

The Terriers finished with 209 points and the Vikings had 151. Lord Botetourt took third with 131 points, Salem finished fourth with 85, Alleghany was fifth with 67.5, and Rockbridge County was last with 62.5.

* The North Cross boys team finished third and the girls were fifth at the Virginia Independent Schools swimming championships at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham.

Trent Johnson (100-yard freestyle) and Will Dichtel led the boys with second-place finishes. Laura Dichtel led the girls with a victory in the 500 freestyle. The Raiders' 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams finished second.
