Chris Childress scored 28 points to lead William Byrd to a 52-46 victory over Lord Botetourt on Tuesday in a Blue Ridge District tournament first-round game at the Salem Civic Center.
William Byrd (15-6) took advantage of a poor second quarter by Lord Botetourt (5-13) to build a 16-point halftime lead. The sixth-seeded Cavaliers played a strong second half to cut into the deficit but couldn't upset the third-seeded Terriers.
The Terriers will play Salem in the semifinals on Friday.
Sean Osborne led Lord Botetourt with 14 points.
In another Blue Ridge District game:
Alleghany 65, Rockbridge County 50: Casey Burks scored 21 points and Casey Jordan added 15 as the Mountaineers (4-16) beat the Wildcats (4-15).
Ricky Wright led Rockbridge County with 20 points.
Alleghany will play Northside on Friday in the semifinals.
Seminole
Liberty 71, Staunton River 54: Raymond Arrington scored a game-high 21 points to lead a balanced Liberty attack as the Minutemen knocked off the Eagles at the Vines Center in Lynchburg.
Liberty (18-0) put four scorers in double figures. J.J. Coles added 13 points, Neil Roop had 12 and Gregg Reynolds chipped in 11. Liberty is ranked No.1 in The Associated Press' Group AA poll.
Hunter Hoggatt, who scored 52 points and hit 10 3-pointers against Appomattox County in the first round on Monday, was held to 20, eight under his average.
Piedmont
Laurel Park 73, Bassett 56: Rashad Wall poured in 35 points, including 12 in the decisive fourth quarter as the Lancers upset the Bengals in the first round.
Sixth-seeded Laurel Park (9-8) scored 32 points in the fourth quarter, and all 32 came from the free-throw line on 32-of-45 shooting.
Third-seeded Bassett (9-9) was led by Corie Manns' 13 points.
Magna Vista 73, Chatham 51: In Ridgeway, the Warriors jumped out to an early lead and ran away with a win over the Cavaliers.
Elliot Milner led Magna Vista (12-4) with 20 points. Terry Harris led Chatham (2-17) with 14.
Magna Vista moves on to face Laurel Park in a semifinal at 7:30 Thursday night at Bassett.
Fieldale-Collinsville 60, Dan River 37: Neil Harbour scored 14 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and had five blocked shots to lead the Cavaliers (15-2) past Dan River in Collinsville.
The Cavaliers will play Patrick County in the semifinals.
Hogoheegee
George Wythe 75, PH-Glade Spring 50: At Wytheville, center Ted Ring dominated in the paint, scoring 24 points as the top-seeded Maroons (18-4) swamped the No.8 Rebels in a first-round game.
GW will meet Castlewood in Thursday's semifinals at 6:30 p.m. at Marion High School.
Lebanon 74, Rural Retreat 57: In Lebanon, Tommy Johnson scored all 14 of his points in the second half as the Pioneers (15-7) beat the Indians (6-15).
The Pioneers play Holston in the second round Thursday at 8 p.m. at Marion.
Regular season
Bath County 62, James River 58: In Hot Springs, David Buzzard scored 18 points as the Chargers (16-3, 9-3) beat the Knights in the Pioneer District.
Jason Perry led the Knights with 15 points
Parry McCluer 82, Craig County 47: Boo Rowsey scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half as Parry McCluer broke open a close game at halftime to pull away from Craig County in a Pioneer District game in New Castle.
Nathan Floyd added eight of his 14 points in the second half for the Fighting Blues (14-6, 6-6).
Craig County (2-14, 0-12) was led by Dewayne Crawford, who scored a game-high 22 points.
Gateway Christian 58, Christian Heritage 33: J.T. Surface scored 11 points and grabbed 19 rebounds and Chris Kirtner added 11 points as the Crusaders downed Christian Heritage in a non-district game in Rocky Mount.
Auburn 60, Shawsville 52: The Eagles broke open a tied score in the fourth to defeat the Shawnees by eight in the play-in game for the Three Rivers District tournament.
Auburn (2-17) will play top-seeded Floyd County on Thursday in a semifinal game. Radford will take on Giles in the other semifinal.
Girls
Franklin County 47, Patrick Henry 35: The Eagles defeated the Patriots in the play-in game of the Roanoke Valley District tournament in Rocky Mount.
Kelli Preston had 11 points and 15 rebounds for Franklin County (4-16), and teammate Heather Matthews also had 11.
Troyleena Pate led the Patriots with 13 points. The Eagles will play Pulaski County in the first round of the district tournament.
Lynchburg Christian 54, North Cross 20: At Lynchburg, Diane Norman scored 16 points, while Shannon Carroll and Alyssa Carr had 15 apiece as the Bulldogs (13-9) ripped the Raiders (5-12) in a first-round game.
Roanoke Valley Christian 44, Timberlake Christian 31: Freshmen Rebecca Bryant and Gina Guthrie scored all 17 of Roanoke Valley Christian's second-quarter points as the Eagles notched a first-round win over Timberlake Christian in the Blue Ridge Conference tournament at Roanoke Catholic.
The Eagles (17-2) will play Lynchburg Christian on Friday.
