Traffic will be rerouted in the next few years as the town of Pulaski begins reconstruction work on three of its bridges.
Work on the Jefferson Avenue bridge is planned for 1997, and the Washington and Randolph Avenue bridges in 1998, Pulaski Town Manager Tom Combiths told Town Council Tuesday night. The town is getting in touch with the Virginia Department of Transportation for assistance in planning the redirection of traffic while the work is under way.
Combiths also reported plans for this spring to put new traffic signals at 5th Street and Madison Avenue, and upgrade those at Edgehill Drive and East Main Street (Virginia 99).
Council named Public Works Director Mike Jenkins as its agent in administering public assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for up to 75 percent of five days of snow removal work, from the January blizzard when Pulaski got 24 inches of snow. The town could get $22,500 to $30,000 in assistance.
The agency did not designate Pulaski for assistance from the flooding which followed the snow, based on an inspection by its representatives assessing weather damage. The town is appealing that decision.
