Three former Timesland athletes head the 1995-96 All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball team announced Wednesday at the ODAC's banquet.
Roanoke's Marcee Hufton, Randolph-Macon's Aimee Beightol and Emory & Henry's Jackie Greene joined R-MC's Jenn Kohler and Guilford's Laura Haynes on the first team. Hufton is a senior guard from William Byrd High School, Beightol a freshman from Cave Spring and Greene a senior from Galax.
Bridgewater coach Laura Mapp announced that she will be retiring after this weekend's conference tournament at the Salem Civic Center. (Complete schedule in Scoreboard. B2)
Mapp has been the Eagles' women's basketball coach for 35 years and is in the top 10 in all-time coaching victories, second in Division III. Her record is 482-281.
``The years have gone by very quickly, but I have worked with some very good people and coached some very fine athletes,'' Mapp said. ``I did not have any idea that I would have a 35-year coaching career and I have truly loved it.''
Bridgewater will elevate assistant coach Jean Willi to the head coaching position next season.
Meanwhile, Randolph-Macon swept the individual honors with Beightol winning rookie of the year, Kohler winning player of the year, and the Yellow Jackets' coach, Carroll LaHaye, taking the top coaching award.
The second team included another former Timesland standout, Roanoke College forward Lori Boyd, a Cave Spring graduate. Boyd was joined by Bridgewater guard Jennifer Young, Randolph-Macon Woman's College forward Jennifer Jensen and two players from Eastern Mennonite, freshman guard Anika Egli and senior guard Keri Bontrager.
