DUBLIN - Free access to the Internet will be available at the Southwest Virginia Governor's School from noon to 1 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays for the rest of the school year.
The school, linked to the Internet since 1990, recently obtained a connection that allows access to all of the resources available on the net.
Staff will be on hand to help and answer questions.
Submissions sought for NRCC journal
DUBLIN - Submissions for Miscellaneous Ink, New River Community College's journal of art and literature must be received by March 4 to be considered for the 1996 edition. Categories include short fiction, poetry, essays, photography or artwork.
Manuscripts should be typed error-free and double spaced on 81/2 x 11 inch paper. A cover sheet should be included with the title, category, writer's name address and day telephone number. Writers may submit up to two entries in each category. Fiction and poetry should be no longer than 10 pages. Essays should be no more than 500 words. Entries should be mailed to Debbie Douthat, New River Community College, P.O. Box 1127, Dublin, Va. 24084.
Photographers should submit unmounted black and white photographs. Photos should be 8 x 10-inch or 5 x 7- inch and glossy, if possible.
Artist should submit black and white drawings or prints, 16 x 20-inch or smaller, that are suitable for reproduction. Include the title, artist's name, address and day telephone number. Entries will be returned by May 1. Entries should be mailed to Aileen Fletcher, New River Community College, P.O. Box 1127, Office 132 Godbey, Dublin, Va. 24084.
Residents of Pulaski, Montgomery, Floyd, and Giles counties and the City of Radford who are at least 18 years old are eligible. Do not submit previously published work.

NRCC sponsors short story contest
DUBLIN - New River Community College is sponsoring a short story contest for people 60 years of age and older. The deadline for submissions is March 22.
Writers may submit two original, unpublished stories, double spaced on single sided 8 1/2 x 11 paper. The name and address of the author should appear on each entry.
Eight winners will be chosen from the stories submitted by people living in the New River Valley, including Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski Counties and the City of Radford. One winner will be chosen from stories submitted by people lving outside the region.
Each winner will receive a plaque and booklet of all short stories submitted for the contest.

Farm conservation funds available
CHRISTIANSBURG - Terry Altizer of The Farm Service Agency says, that funds are now available to correct farm conservaton problems. Farmers need to sign up as soon as possible because of limited funds.
Cost-share assistance is available for improving steep pastures (soil sample necessary), installing livestock watering projects, planting trees and other needed conservatoin measures. The FSA office is located at 7 N. Franklin St., Christiansburg.

Government conference in Roanoke
ROANOKE - The Virginia Government Finance Officer's Association and Radford University's Center for Governmental and Nonprofit Accounting (CGNA) will jointly sponsor this year's Government Innovations, Technology and Management Issues Conference at Hotel Roanoke on March 11-12.
The conference will focus on revenue collections and will include a legislative update, World Wide Web workshopand a presentation on working with the media. Local government managers will find the conference especially helpful in teaching ways to develop innovative solutions to problems. The conference counts towards 10 hours of continuing education credit for CPAs, treasurers and commissioners.
The CGNA provides quality educational opportunities to professionals and a forum for idea exchange among faculty, students and professionals in governmental and nonprofit accounting.
A conference fee of $200 includes continental breakfast for both days, lunch and a reception, refreshment breaks and all instructional materials.

SHARE Virginia plans special Easter package
CHRISTIANSBURG - SHARE Virginia will have a special Easter holiday package for the March food package that includes a ham, chicken tenders, oranges, bean soup mix, cabbage and other fruits and vegetables.
SHARE is open to anyone who wishes to participate. Each package costs $14 in cash or food stamps, plus 2 hours of volunteer time, in exchange for $30 of groceries that include fresh fruits, vegetables and frozen meats. Community service may be done at the local host organization, the SHARE warehouse, or any other volunteer or chuch organization.
Sign-ups will be taken beginning Saturday, Feb. 24, at SHARE host organizations. Sign-up deadline is March 10 for distribution on March 23.

Nominees sought for service awards
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Coalition for Community is seeking nominees for its annual Community Services Awards. Four individuals or groups will be recognized at the April 28 Award Dinner. The dinner meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1845 Cambria St., Christianburg.
The Coalition seeks to recognize individuals or groups in the New River Valley who in the past year have demonstrated actions which build community amidst diversity in the field of education and community service.
