Bunker Hill Foods of Bedford said Wednesday that it plans to hire about 25 additional employees in August to help prepare a new product line of canned tamales.
The company has 165 workers who process the Bunker Hill line of other types of canned meats, said Lowell H. ``Pete'' Peterson, the company's president.
The tamales will be packaged under the Paramount Foods label, a brand recently acquired by Bunker Hill's owner. Bunker Hill was purchased last August by Castleberry/Snow's Brands Inc. of Augusta, Ga.
The company said Paramount Foods was established more than 100 years ago and marketed its products in the central part of the United States.
Paramount sold its pickle and salad-dressing business in December to Dean Pickle and Specialty Products Co. of Franklin Park, Ill., Bunker Hill officials said. Dean, in its turn, has licensed to Castleberry/Snow's the use of the Paramount label for its meat canning.
Production of the tamales will be moved to Bedford from a Paramount plant at Louisville, Ky., Peterson said.
The licensing and transfer was announced by Stuart Frankenthal, manager of JASS Meat Products Co., formerly known as Paramount Foods, of Louisville and by Robert P. Kirby, chairman of Castleberry/Snow's Brands of Augusta.
