Rodney Sawyers scored a career-high 20 points and Galax made 22 of 28 shots from the field in the second half to knock off Narrows 74-52 in a Mountain Empire District boys' basketball tournament quarterfinal game Wednesday night in Galax.
The Maroon Tide (10-10) broke open a close game at halftime by outscoring Narrows 27-13 in the third quarter.
Galax got 15 points from Ken Houtz and 14 from Nate Noel, who made four 3-point goals. Jeff Ross added nine points, a career-high 10 assists and six rebounds.
Narrows was led by Robbie Stafford, who scored 19 points, and Joe Shipbaugh, who added 17. Bryan Pruett was held to just eight points.
Galax will play Rocky Gap in the semifinals Friday at George Wythe. The Maroon Tide split with the Eagles in the regular season.
Fort Chiswell 78, Bland 63: Brad Hughes scored 19 points to lead four scorers in double figures as the Pioneers knocked off the Rockets in a Mountain Empire District quarterfinal in Bland.
Heath Bralley added 14 points, including four 3-pointers for the Pioneers, who went on a 9-0 run to start the second half and gradually pulled away.
Bland (9-10) was led by Lee Meadows, who scored a game-high 23 points, and Andy Selfe, who added 20 points and blocked six shots.
Fort Chiswell advances to the semifinals against Grayson County Friday at George Wythe.
