A man fended off two armed would-be robbers Monday night by threatening to pour gasoline over them and set them on fire.
Carl Williams, 44, of Northwest Roanoke reported to police that he was driving in the 2900 block of Salem Turnpike Northwest when he ran out of gasoline. As he walked back from a nearby convenience store, where he bought some gas, two men followed him and asked for a cigarette and money.
When Williams refused to give them money, the men drew handguns, police said. Williams threatened the men with the gas. The men fled. No one was injured.
