in downtown Roanoke. Now a "teaching pool," it is equipped with a
hydraulic chair lift for swimmers who need help getting in and out,
maintains a temperature of 88 degrees and has manageable depths of 4
to 4 1/2 feet throughout. The renovation project also included new
handicapped-accessible shower and changing facilities. The YWCA last
year closed its Salem center, which had a heated indoor pool, and
channeled resources into its downtown Roanoke center, built in
1925.
