UNC PULLS AWAY FROM VMI IN SECOND HALF

Antawn Jamison hit all but two of his 13 shots for 25 points Thursday as No. 17 North Carolina ran away to a 99-76 victory over VMI in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Jamison got 20 points in the first half, hitting all nine shots he tried, as North Carolina took full advantage of its height and hit 69 percent of its field goals, the Tar Heels' best shooting performance in a half this season.

About the only downside for North Carolina (19-7) was Vince Carter's right ankle injury late in the first half. He stepped on the foot of a VMI player and went down in the Tar Heels' end of the floor. Carter came back in the second half and got eight points.

The Keydets (15-9) haven't beaten the Tar Heels since the 1952-53 season, when both schools were members of the Southern Conference.

The Keydets' best run was a 12-4 burst to start the second half. Maurice Spencer's 3-pointer with 16:53 left drew VMI to 57-47, but a 2-for-15 shooting run combined with a 19-6 North Carolina surge essentially settled the game.

Jeff McInnis got 15, Serge Zwikker scored 14 and Dante Calabria had 13 for the Tar Heels.

Lawrence Gullette finished with 20 and former Lord Botetourt standout Bobby Prince got all of his 14 points in the second half for the Keydets.

Notes

KITTLES SUSPENDED: Kerry Kittles, the top scorer for fourth-ranked Villanova, has been suspended for the team's final three regular-season games because of the unauthorized use of a university telephone credit card number. ``He made a significant number of calls over a period of several months,'' athletic director Gene DeFilippo said in a statement. Kittles has averaged 20.3 and 7.3 rebounds for the Wildcats, who meet No. 3 Connecticut on Sunday at the Spectrum.

HOT TICKET: New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority officials denied reports they are holding a large number of tickets for the NCAA Final Four for state politicians and businessmen. Critics charged Wednesday officials were hoarding as many as 1,100 tickets, 400 of them for politicians and about 700 for authority use and for business associates.

Only 5 percent of game tickets were made available to the general public, said authority president Robert Mulcahy. But the NCAA mandated that percentage, just as it has at previous venues.
