Heather Randolph, a preseason Division II All-American, tossed 11 innings of no-hit ball and picked up two victories as Carson-Newman swept Virginia Tech in a softball doubleheader in Jefferson City, Tenn. The Eagles won the first game 10-0 and the second 3-0.
It was the season opener for both schools and the first game of varsity status for the Hokies.

Washington and Lee sophomore pitcher Chris Pugsley threw two innings of two-hit ball and senior Graig Fantuzzi had three hits as the Generals defeated Maryville 6-5 in the first round of the Savannah College of Art & Design baseball tournament on Thursday.
Salem defeated Piedmont District runner-up Bassett 16-14, 15-13 in the quarterfinals of the Region III volleyball tournament at Jefferson Forest. The Spartans will face Jefferson Forest, the Seminole District champions, in a semifinal match Saturday in Forest.
Nelson County defeated Piedmont champ Patrick County 15-7, 10-15, 15-13 in the other quarterfinal. Nelson County will meet William Byrd in the first semifinal Saturday at 1 p.m.
Narrows defeated Giles 15-10, 15-5 in a Region C volleyball quarterfinal at Narrows. The Green Wave will play host to Hogoheegee District winner George Wythe on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
At Glenvar, Northwood defeated the Highlanders 15-8, 15-5 in another quarterfinal match in the Region C tournament.
At Auburn, the Eagles defeated Grayson County 16-14, 15-6 in a quarterfinal match of the Region C tournament.
