The Virginia Tech women's soccer team announced its team honors Friday night during its annual awards banquet in Blacksburg.
Goalkeeper Hope Handley was chosen most valuable player. The sophomore set numerous records this season in the saves category. She set a school and Atlantic 10 Conference record for saves in a season with 179 and she also finished sixth in the nation in saves.
The best offensive player award went to co-captain Michele Hager. The senior led the team with three goals and six points. She also tied for the team lead in shots on goal with 39.
Co-captain Cindy Zier was named defensive player of the year for the third straight season.
Midfielder Melissa McCaughan was named most improved player.

East Tennessee State and Marshall are the leaders after the first day of competition at the Southern Conference Indoor Track Championships held in Lexington.
East Tennessee State leads Western Carolina by one point, 32-31, in the women's competition with Appalachian State in third. Marshall leads the men's competition with 42 points and VMI is second with 37.
VMI swept the top two spots in the shot put with Ryan Earley winning and Jason Clendenin coming in second. Eric Gay was second in the long jump with teammate Darrius Jackson in fourth.
The Virginia Tech golf team is in 17th place after posting a first-round 312 in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships at the Queens Harbor Yacht & Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. Augusta College leads the 54-hole event at 289.
Robby Rasmussen shot a 4-over-par 76 to lead the Hokies. Rasmussen is tied with 12 other golfers at 48th. The individual leader is Graham Davidson of Mississippi State, who fired a 69.
Virginia Tech's Sean Farrell and Curtis Deal each carded 78s. Teammate Chip Glover posted an 80 and David Havens an 81.
In Savannah, Ga., Washington and Lee committed nine errors as it dropped two games in the opening day of the Savannah College of Art & Design Tournament. The Generals (1-3 overall) lost 11-1 to Benedict (S.C.) College and 4-1 to the host Bees. Washington and Lee plays today at noon in the third-place game.
Christiansburg was the highest placing Timesland team after the first day of the Region IV wrestling tournament at Graham High School.
Grundy led the way with a score of 125.50. Christiansburg finished the day seventh with 57 points.
William Byrd scored 95.5 points to take the first-round lead in the Region III wrestling tournament in Ridgeway.
