RICHMOND NATIVE CLAIMS NISSAN LEAD

Robert Wrenn, a Richmond native whose only PGA victory is a distant memory even to him, shot a 2-under-par 69 Friday to break out of a three-way tie for the Nissan Open lead in Los Angeles.

Wrenn, relegated to satellite tournaments in 1995 after a decade on the PGA Tour, went to 6-under through two rounds over Riviera Country Club while some much better-known players made bids for the lead before faltering.

Both Craig Stadler and Steve Elkington, who started the second day of the tournament tied with Wrenn for the lead, had 70s to drop a shot behind.

The 36-year-old Wrenn, who played on the Nike Tour last year and had to attend qualifying school to regain his PGA card, was at 7-under through 13 holes Friday. But he bogeyed No.14 before parring out.

His only PGA win was the 1987 Buick Open.

``It feels like ancient history now,'' Wrenn said. ``The best that I can draw from that experience is two things: that I know I'm capable of winning, and that I'm capable of shooting some pretty low scores.
