EXPRESS ROAD TRIP OFF TO STORMY START

TOLEDO SENDS Roanoke to its 12th loss in its last 15 road games.

The Express' trip started on a sour note as Norm Dezainde scored the first hat trick of his professional career, including the game-winner, as the Toledo Storm defeated Roanoke 6-3 on Friday night in an East Coast Hockey League game at the Toledo Sports Arena.

Dezainde knocked in the puck during a goal-mouth scramble at the 8:04 mark of the third period after Dennis Purdie was denied by Express goalie Daniel Berthiaume from close range.

Barely a minute later, Toledo's Mark Stitt one-timed a loose puck in the high slot after Roanoke's Craig Herr misplayed an outlet feed at his feet as the Storm took a 5-3 lead. Dezainde completed his hat trick with an empty-netter at 18:04.

Duane Harmer opened the scoring for the Express in the first period, as his red-line dump squirted through the pads of Toledo goaltender David Goverde at 4:36.

Former Storm forward Jeff Jablonski burned his old teammates with a left-wing blast midway through the period, collecting an Ilya Dubkov steal at the red line and beating Goverde again through the pads for his team-leading 33rd goal at 10:56. Roanoke (32-22-2 ) led 2-0 at the first intermission despite being outshot 15-4.

Toledo (41-11-5) roared to three consecutive goals in the second period.

Dennis Purdie beat Berhtiuame on a third-rebound backhand at 3:59 to make it 2-1. Dezainde tied the score a few seconds after coming out of the penalty box, controlling a give-and-go feed with Mike Kolenda up the right wing and snapping a wicked wrist shot by Berthiaume on the stick side at 9:20.

Toledo took a 3-2 lead on its only power play of the game, as B.J. MacPherson poked a loose puck through the legs of Berthiaume after the Express failed to pounce on the puck in the crease at 11:59. Jason Clarke was off the ice for slashing.

The Express, outshot 32-8 through two periods, managed to tie the score late in the second period on a five-on-three center-point power-play blast by Wade Gibson at 15:54.

Toledo is one game shy of tying the ECHL record for consecutive games without a loss. Toledo, 17-0-3 since the arrival of Goverde, is one shy of the record of 21 without a loss set this season by Richmond.

Roanoke has won three of its past 15 away from the Roanoke Civic Center. The Express has won seven in a row at home.

The Express travels to Pennsylvania for games tonight in Johnstown (7:30) and Sunday in Erie (6 p.m.).
