VIRGINIA TECH SOLIDIFIES SPOT IN ATLANTIC 10

Michelle Hollister scored 20 points and Sherry Banks (William Byrd High School) added a career-high 18 to lead Virginia Tech to a 79-59 victory over Dayton on Saturday night in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at Cassell Coliseum.

The victory, combined with losses by Duquesne and Xavier, moved the Hokies (10-15 overall, 8-7 conference) into sole possession of third place in the A-10's West Division. Tech entertains division-leading George Washington at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Lynette Nolley (Floyd County) added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds for Tech, which held the Flyers to 33 percent field-goal shooting (22-for-66) - including 20 percent from 3-point range (4-20).

Steph Smith led Dayton (8-17, 3-12) with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

In other games:

Radford 86, UNC Asheville 58: The Highlanders (14-10, 10-3) tuned up for their showdown with Big South Conference leader UNC Greensboro by routing the Bulldogs (5-19, 3-9) in Radford.

Radford led by six at halftime and broke open the game by outscoring UNC Asheville 22-10 to open the second half and go up 62-44. Lisa Howard led the way with 27 points and six assists, and Kim Hairston (Bassett) added 21 points for Radford. Rebecca McNeil (Christiansburg) scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half for Radford.

UNC Asheville got 15 points from Lee Christiansen, but she committed eight turnovers.

Radford entertains UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m. Thursday.

No.9 Virginia 77, Maryland 53: Tora Suber scored 26 points as the Cavaliers (22-5, 13-3) overpowered the Terrapins (13-13, 7-9) to clinch their sixth consecutive ACC regular-season title.

UVa held a 34-31 halftime lead before Suber scored 10 points during a 23-6 run to open the second half. Suber hit 10 of 13 field-goal attempts and the Cavaliers held Maryland to 33 percent shooting.

Mimi McKinney added 13 of her 20 points after halftime for UVa.
