Oliver McCall, in his first fight since he lost the WBC heavyweight title to Frank Bruno, stopped previously unbeaten Oleg Maskaev of Kazakhstan in the first round Saturday night.
McCall, whose loss to Bruno cost him a big payday against Mike Tyson, backed up Maskaev from the opening bell and put the 26-year-old former Soviet Red Army fighter down with a combination after just 1:38. Maskaev made it to his feet before the 10 count, but referee Joseph Cooper stopped the bout.
McCall, 30 years old and 232 pounds, improved to 27-6. Maskaev, 229 1/2 pounds, lost for the first time in 16 pro fights.
