Allison Maxwell and Kayla Prichard will celebrate their second birthdays on Thursday. Allison and Kayla are in Susan Moore's second-grade class at Oak Grove Elementary School in Roanoke County.
Yep, you read that right. They're second-graders and just turning 2. Are they geniuses? Maybe so, maybe not, but that's not why they're in the second grade. Both Allison and Kayla and leap-year babies.
Leap year babies are born on Feb. 29. And because Feb. 29 only comes around every four years, that explains why they'll be turning 2 instead of 8.
A leap year is a year of 366 days instead of 365 days. A leap year is a year whose number is exactly divisible by 4. The next leap year will be 2000.
Don't feel too sorry for Allison and Kayla. Both girls still get to celebrate with parties every year. "It's pretty fun being a leap-year baby because, well, just because," said Allison.
Says Kayla: "It's fun because everybody else is different from you."
