SEAMAN RECRUIT CHARLES D. BARNS, son of Charles F. and Pamela G. Barns of Vinton, recently completed basic training at Great Lakes, Ill.

Barns is a 1995 graduate of Staunton River High School.

SGT. RICKY L. HOSTUTLER has received the Army Achievement Medal for meritorious service, acts of courage, or other outstanding accomplishments.

Hostutler, the son of Raymond L. Hostutler of Roanoke, is stationed in Bamberg, Germany.

CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER RAYMOND A. PERDUE SR. retired Feb. 1 after serving 22 years in the Coast Guard.

Perdue, the son of Carl L. Perdue of Sandston and Elizabeth A. Collier of Roanoke, has a son, Eric in his first year at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn.

SENIOR AIRMAN ERIC D. NICHOLS, a ground radio communications specialist at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi, has been awarded the Good Conduct Medal.

Nichols is the son of Christine L. Nichols of Vinton.

BRIAN S. ELLIS , the son of Anna L. and E. Wayne Ellis of Roanoke, has been promoted to Air Force staff sergeant. He is a quality assurance inspector at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

JEAN E. HAVENS, daughter of George N. and Vicki J. Havens of Roanoke, has been awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal. Havens, serving at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, received the medal for meritorious service, courage and other outstanding accomplishments.
