WHO, WHEN & WHERE

St. Patrick's parade

The eighth annual St. Patrick's Day parade will take place March 16 at 3 p.m. in downtown Roanoke.

Anyone may march in the parade, and groups are encouraged to bring identifying banners. Stop by the registration desk at the First Union Tower plaza between 2 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. the day of the parade to register and line up.

The parade will assemble and disperse there, between Salem and Norfolk avenues.

Entries will be judged at the reviewing stand at the Roanoke City Market. Prizes will be awarded in a number of categories, including reddest hair for infants, children and adults. Irish green will be the order of the day for costumes and car or float decorations.

In the event of inclement weather, a decision will be made by noon as to whether to proceed with the parade. If canceled, the parade will not be rescheduled. Call the Roanoke City Office of Special Events at 981-2630.

Tickets are on sale for ``Jumpin' at Jefferson,'' the 1996 Roanoke Symphony Ball and the gala inaugural event in the new Fitzpatrick Hall at The Jefferson Center. The dinner-dance will be held March 30 from 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Tickets may be ordered by phone. Call 343-6221.

Nonprofit fund-raising

Roanoke Festival in the Park is offering area nonprofit groups and organizations the opportunity to take advantage of Festival's marketing capabilities through joint fund-raising efforts.

Nonprofit groups can participate in button, T-shirt, ShrimpFest tickets and mylar balloon sales campaigns this spring and receive a portion of the proceeds. There is no cash investment required to participate.

Similar opportunities are available with First Night Roanoke.

For more information, contact Sandra Tibbs-Robinson at 342-2640.

Drumming workshop

Master musician Ed Mikenas will give a drumming workshop March 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Sedalia Center at Big Island in Bedford County.

Everyone will have the opportunity to drum and to experience how drumming helps them connect with themselves and with others in the group.

Participants may bring their own drums or use those provided by the instructor. Parents are encouraged to bring their children.

The fee for the workshop is $25. Registration deadline is Friday.

The Sedalia Center is on Virginia 638 off Virginia 122 between Bedford and Big Island.
