LOTTA WOMEN and several men make up the cast that sets the literary classic "Little Women" to music in "Jo." Showtimers' family-oriented season opener, directed by Lee Cruise with music by William Dyer and lyrics and book by Don Parks, will be performed tonight and Saturday night at 8, Sunday at 2 p.m., then Wednesday through March 9 at 8 p.m., with a final performance at 2 p.m. on March 10. TALENT TEST: Youngsters aged 6-18 from the Lansdowne and Jamestown housing communities tonight will mark the end of eight weeks of studying the performing arts with an evening of drama, drumming, dances of Africa and Vietnam, skits, songs and other shows of talent. The program in Virginia Western Community College's Whitman Auditorium begins at 7 p.m. A $3 donation will help support ongoing youth club activities. Call 982-1427.
SPORTS AND A SPOT: A spot of tea with crumpets will be served from 2-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday as the Virginia Museum of Transportation and the British Sports Car Club kick off a show of fine British sports cars including MGs, Jaguars, Morgans, Triumphs and a rare Sunbeam Tiger. Admission to the show, which runs through March 10, costs $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and $3 for children aged 3-18. ART'S SAKE AUCTION: Proceeds from Theater at Lime Kiln's sixth annual auction and dinner gala Saturday at Virginia Military Institute's Moody Hall will help fund Lime Kiln's Artists-in-Residence program, which places the theater's artists in area schools to help students develop creativity, self-esteem and appreciation for cultural diversity.
The $75 per couple or $40 per person auction ticket price includes a 6 p.m. cocktail reception, a bidding number, dinner with wine and dessert and a performance of "The Baker, The Bear & The Blacksmith," plus opportunities to bid on a ton of tempting items. Call 463-3074.
MUSICAL MINISTERS: In addition to performing and recording their inspirational music, gospel artists Randy Phillips, Shawn Craig and Dan Dean are able to hold down ministries of their own, respectively, in Austin, Texas; St. Louis, Mo. and Irving, Texas. MOZART'S MYSTERY: Mozart's "Requiem" was anonymously commissioned and was not finished when the composer died. One of Mozart's pupils took on the task of completing the work, and in the process added passages of his own.
Sunday at 3 p.m., the Rockbridge Chorus - under the direction of William McCorkle and featuring soprano Christine Schadeberg, mezzo-soprano Patricia O'Brien Campbell, tenor Michael Henry and bass Wayne Kompelien - will perform the "Requiem" at the Lenfest Center for the Performing Arts in Lexington. CLASSICAL CLASSIC: Robert and Pamela Swenson Trent say that 19th century classical music was "written for husbands and wives to play at home." On Thursday at 8 p.m., the husband-and-wife duo will bring its audience onto the stage of Radford University's Preston Auditorium, close the curtains in an attempt to create an intimate home ambience, and perform works of Beethoven, Molino and Giulianion on period instruments including an authentic 19th century guitar and a fortepiano built especially for the couple, which bills itself as Duo Frienze.
