Both houses of the Virginia General Assembly have approved a bill that would allow Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia to offer reduced-price tuition to Eastern Kentucky residents.
The Wise County college, the only four-year branch of UVa in Virginia, is 14 miles from the Kentucky border. The bill, which still must be signed by Gov. George Allen, provides for reduced tuition rates for Kentuckians who live within a 50-mile radius.
Many Eastern Kentuckians who have shown an interest in attending Clinch Valley have been discouraged by the high out-of-state tuition, Vice Chancellor George Culbertson said. Eastern Kentuckians, meanwhile, contribute up to a third of Wise County's sales taxes.
Current tuition at Clinch Valley is $3,200 for in-state students and $7,524 for out-of-state students. The reduced tuition rate has not yet been determined.
