Mark Smith II of Christiansburg recently received his Eagle Scout Award. Smith is a member of the Squoyah Council Troop No. 408. Smith's project involved providing families with a winter wood supply. Smith is the son of Darlene Castor and grandson of Ed and Barbara Goad of Christianburg.
Tim Meyers of Blacksburg, was recently named the 1996 president of the New River Valley Bicycle Club.
TheSouthside Garden Club of Blacksburg met in February at the home of Darlene Simpson. Officers for 1996 were installed. President is Darlene Simpson; vice president is Susan Caceci; recording secretary is Delores Hendricks; and treasure is Venita Witherspoon.
Blue ribbons went to Norma Bunnell, Darlene Simpson, and Dee Baker.
Blacksburg Fire Department recently elected officers for 1996. They were Keith Bolte, fire chief; Bobby Carner, assistant chief; Dennis Price, captain; Mike Linkous, 1st lieutenant; Donnie Cromer, 2nd lieutenant; Randy Alls, 2nd lieutenant; Norman Croy, 2nd lieutenant; and Fred Linkous, secretary and treasurer. Anthony Wilson was named Member of the Year for 1995.
Twin County Ruritan Club recently elected officers for 1996. This club serves the Salem and Shawsville area. Officers are Talmage Mathis, president; Nolan Shipp, vice president; Trudy Graham, treasurer; Janie Mathis, secretary; Curt Helmandollar, 3 year director; Edith Parker, 2 year director; and Lynn Ricker, 1 year director.
Charles Drake, is the 1996 president of the New River Valley Chapter No. 1134, National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). Other officers are Charles Cooper, first vice president; Paul Smeal, second vice president; Andy Lambert, secretary; Wilda Sibert, treasurer; and A. Travis Poole, past president.
Bobbie J. Davis, of Blacksburg, was named Heritage Hall's Associate of the Year for 1995. Davis is a certified nursing assistant and has worked at Heritage Hall for three years. Davis was given the award in recognition of her dedication and caring attitude toward residents.
Rev. L. Glenn Tyndall was recently given Blacksburg Host Lions Club "Citizen of the Year" award. Rev. Tyndall, United Methodist student minister and head of Virginia Tech's Wesley Foundation, was recognized for his leadership in establishing the Montgomery County Christmas Store and for continuing to provide leadership for the project year after year.
David Williams, a senior at Blacksburg High School, recently received his Eagle Scout award at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church. He is the son of Jim and Harriet Williams and a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 44.
