Report on children
``KIDS COUNT in the Roanoke Valley,'' a report on the current state of our children, on March 14 from 8:30 a.m to noon will feature Susan Gholston, state KIDS COUNT coordinator.
The event, to be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, Roanoke, will include presentations of local studies, the keynote presentation and a panel presentation.
The fee is $5. Space is limited; advance registration is recommended.

Mental illness event
``Creativity and Mental Illness: Honoring the Artists' Contribution for Enriching Our Lives,'' is the subject of a presentation by Jitendra Desai, M.D., on March 11 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room of the Salem Civic Center.
The program will include violinist Benedict Goodfriend of the Kandinsky Trio, who will discuss and play selections by composers who lived with mental illness. Also featured are pianist Beth Carruthers and readings.
Desai is Medical Director of the Center for Behavioral Health, Lewis-Gale Pavilion.
The Alliance for the Mentally Ill, sponsor of the event, is a local group dedicated to improving the quality of life for persons afflicted with mental illnesses. The organization offers support, education and advocacy for families and friends of persons with mental illnesses.

Anything that floats
The Festival on the James has announced the Great James River Anything-That-Floats Race, scheduled for June 15.
All crafts must be constructed by the crew and cannot be of a mass-produced nature. Crews must consist of three people, all 18 or over. All crafts must be human-powered. Motors and sails are not allowed.
The entry fee is $25 per craft. A trophy will be awarded to the first crew to cross the finish line with 90 percent of the craft intact and all crew members aboard.

Gardening class
The Franklin County Family YMCA is offering ``Gardening With Louis,'' a class on flowers, plants, shrubs and other gardening concerns. Classes will be held Wednesdays in March from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Franklin County Library Community Room. Advance registration is required. Space is limited.

Disney World vacation
Mill Mountain Theatre is offering a chance to win a family vacation for four at Walt Disney World.
Tickets may be purchased during intermission at upcoming performances of ``Macbeth,'' ``Three Tall Women,'' ``Beauty and the Beast,'' ``Grace and Glorie'' and ``Rumors'' or by calling 224-1219. Tickets are $5 each.
The trip includes round-trip airfare, accommodations at the Polynesian Hotel, admission to all attractions at Epcot Center, the Magin Kingdom, MGM Studios and more, three meals a day, all transfers and taxes and unlimited golf. The trip must be taken after Sept. 1.
The winning ticket will be drawn at the closing performance of ``Rumors'' on May 26.
