Radford U. official honored by secretaries

RADFORD - Jerry L. Hutchens, executive director of the Radford University Foundation, has been named 1995 Executive of the Year by the New River Valley chapter of Professional Secretaries International.

Executives are nominated by their secretaries and voted on by chapter members, based on support the executive gives to the secretary and to Professional Secretaries International. Hutchens was nominated by Judy Willis.

Two officers promoted by Blacksburg bank

BLACKSBURG - Larry K. Hayes has been promoted to vice president and Fred Jackson III has been hired as controller at the National Bank of Blacksburg.

Hayes has worked at the bank since 1979 and is responsible for the bank's data processing. He has played a major role in upgrading the bank's management information systems and installing a personal computer network.

Jackson has more than 22 years' banking experience, including eight years as controller at Piedmont Trust Bank in Martinsville. He will oversee accounting and financial reporting at National Bank.

Blacksburg firm wins state chamber award

BLACKSBURG - Fiber and Sensors Technology, a high tech fiber optics company located in the Blacksburg Industrial Park, recently won two state awards from the Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

The 6-year-old business was named to the Fantastic 50, marking it as one of the top 50 private fast growing companies in Virginia. It also received a Virginia Vangaurd award, naming F&S the fastest growing private high tech company in Virginia.

This is the first time F&S has received these awards.

Old Town Printing cited for designs

CHRISTIANSBURG - Old Town Printing in downtown Christiansburg received three Awards of Excellence this week from the Printing Industries of Virginia, a statewide trade group.

A Christmas invitation for Virginia Tech's Waste Policy Institute won for its use of color and close registration. The annual membership directory for the local chapter of the American Society for Quality Control was recognized, as was a stationery design by the printing company on parchment with gold ink.

Hanshew new manager at Thermastructure

RADFORD - Donald R. Hanshew Sr. has been named vice president and plant manager for Thermastructure Inc.

Hanshew was plant manager for RADVA Corp. before coming to Thermastructure. He has supervised manufacturing facilities in Portsmouth, Kennesaw, Ga.; Melbourne, Australia; and Pereslavl-Zalessky, Russia.

Hills Insurance Agency marks 20 years

RADFORD - Hill Insurance Agency in Radford is celebrating 20 years in business this month.

Sonny Hill started the agency in his basement on March 1, 1976. Since then, the company has grown to have its own building, a satellite office in Floyd, 11 full-time employees and one part-time employee, and more than 3,500 clients. More than 100 of those clients have been with the company since its inception.

Hill, who has lived in the New River Valley since he was a Virginia Tech student in the 1960s, is first vice president and president-elect of the Professional Insurance Agents Association of Virginia. He was agent of the year for 1994-95.

The company celebrated the anniversary with an open house and new sign last week.

Hill is active in church and professional and civic organizations.
