AKERS, Mabel Irene Gibson, 72, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, March 1, 1996 in a local hospital. She was retired from ITT and was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Lee Akers Jr. Survivors include her husband, Ralph L. Akers; two daughters, Nancy L. Childress and Kaye Weddle both of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Donald Lee Catron Sr., Sherry Mitc hell, Patricia Jeffries, Melissa Light, Lisa Kaye Clevenger; three great-grandchildren, Donald Lee Catron Jr., Nickie and Jeremy Mitchell; one sister, Katherine Weeks. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday, March 4, 1996 from the Lotz Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. ALDERMAN, Vada Conner, 91, of Meadows of Dan, passed away Saturday, March 2, 1996 in a Stuart Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph S. Alderman; three sons, Posey, Edd and Fred Alderman; and one daughter, Lucille Cox. Surviving include five daughters, Ruth Austin, Radford, Irene Alderman, Christiansburg, Clara Williams, Stuart, Ruby Sloan, Christiansburg, Rosetta Reynolds, Meadows of Dan; three sons, Glenn Alderman, Greenville, Tenn., Frank Alderman, Bassett, Joseph Alderman Jr., Easton, Md.; three stepdaughters, Beulah Linkous, Riner, Edna Marshall, Vesta, Laura Mae Cockram, Vesta; one brother, Herman Conner, Floyd; 36 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren. BOWMAN, Annie McPherson, (``Kyle''), 91, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord Friday, March 1, 1996. She was the beloved wife of Robert (Roscoe) Bow man for 71 years. She was born in Craig County to the late John McPherson and Sarah (Lizzie) McPherson. She was a member of Brentwood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by four sons, James, Carl, Nelson, Claud. She was the devoted mother and grandmother of four daughters and sons-in-law, Lema and Billy Leeder, Chesterfield, Deloris and Ray Price, New Castle, Anna and Robert Secrist, Roanoke, Sylvia and James Jeffries, Stewartsville; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Kate Bowles, Blacksburg, Lucy Garman, Catawba. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 4, 1996, at Lotz Salem Chapel at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jesse Powell and the Rev. Elmer Clemons officiating. CARSON, J. Stull, of Buchanan, died Saturday, March 2, 1996. Born on June 13, 1931, he was the son of the late Hirst and Mary Aiken Stull Carson. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Barger Carson; sons, John Stull Carson Jr. of Buchanan and David Aiken Carson of Denver, Colo.; twin brother and sister-in-law, H. Clay and Whilden Carson of Dracut, Mass.; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Hirste C. and the Rev. Gale D. Lammey of Spruce Pine, N.C.; mother-in-law, Eunice B. Barger of Buchanan, and a special cousin, Virginia Obenshain of Albuquerque, N.M. Mr. Carson was a graduate of Buchanan High School, and attended Greenbrier Military School and the University of Richmond. He retired from Norfolk Southern in 1987 as manager in Revenue Accounting, and then served as a Botetourt County Schools bus driver from 1987 to 1995. He was a charter and life member of the Buchanan Rescue Squad for 43 years, serving as squad captain for 25 years, and a past member of the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Depar tment. He was a past member of the Buchanan Town Council, serving as mayor for four terms. Mr. Carson served as a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals for Botetourt County, a member of the Botetourt County Planning Commission and chairman of the Botetourt County Highway Safety Commission. He was a past member of the Buchanan Rotary Club, a member and elder of Buchanan Presbyterian Church and a trustee of Fairview Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 1996, at Buchanan Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Gale D. Lammey and the Rev. Walter B. Barger officiating. Born November 5, 1912 in Nelson County, Va., she was the daughter o f the late Charles William Roberts and Willie Launa Snell Roberts. She was preceded in death by one son, Samuel (Bobby) H. Critzer III. Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Samuel H. Born February 27, 1914, in Campbell County, Va. she was the daughter of the late George W. Saunders and Sally Coleman Saunders. Mrs. McManamay was a retired Burler from Burlington Industries and a member of the Old Stone Church of the Brethren in Buena Vista. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alden J. McManamay. Mrs. Newcomer was a retired seamstress from Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, and was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Mrs. Newcomer was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Leonard Newcomer Sr. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Arthur L. Newcomer Jr. and Pamela L. WHORRELL, William James, III, (``Bill""), 78, of 1421 Grove Drive, Pulaski, died Friday, March 1, 1996, in Radford Community Hospital. Born on January 2, 1918, in Renick, W.Va., he was the son of the late William James Whorrell Jr. and Floy Whiting Whorrell. Mr. Whorrell was the branch manager for Whiting Oil Company in Pulaski, where he began to work in his twenties and continued until his retirement in 1980. He was a member and past president of Pulaski Kiwanis Club, and was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church. He was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Army Air Corps, where he was discharged in 1945. He also attended Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. Mr. Whorrell was an outdoorsman who enjoyed taking care of animals. His favorite sports were football and fishing. He took an active interest in current events. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Don (Gail) Clarke of Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. John (Yvonne) Lavender of Bolton Landing, N.Y., and four grandchildren, Alicia, Joel, Jeannette and Jason. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday from Thomas M. Seagle and Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Melvin Lavender and the Rev. Donna Lavender officiating. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Morningside Cemetery, Renick, W.Va. Visitation will be after 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends from 6 until the 8 p.m. funeral time.
