YELLOW JACKETS MOVE AHEAD

Randolph-Macon advanced to the NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament "Sweet 16" on Saturday with a 99-66 victory over Millsaps College in Ashland.

Aimee Beightol (Cave Spring) had 14 points and eight assists before fouling out. Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the year Jenn Kohler led Randolph-Macon (28-1) with six 3-point goals and 24 points.

UNC Wilmington scored four runs in the fifth inning en route to a 7-2 college baseball victory over Virginia Tech in Wilmington, N.C. Tech center fielder Kevin Barker slugged his third home run in two games for the Hokies, and catcher Josh Herman (William Byrd) had two hits.

Roanoke native Bettina Altizer, 33, broke three U.S. records at the Shenandoah Open powerlifting competition in Woodstock. Altizer competed in the 139-pound class. She benched 255 pounds, squatted 428 and deadlifted 380 for a 1,063-pound total. Her bench, squat and total weights were records.

Roanoke's Carolyn Bucher, 15, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 9.14 seconds at the Florida Senior Championships in Clearwater, Fla., to qualify for the junior nationals. Bucher also took third in the 500 freestyle (5:05.04) and fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.30). The junior nationals start March 19 in Nashville, Tenn.
