Attackman Doug Knight tied a school record with eight goals as second-ranked Virginia beat No.12 Syracuse 17-15 in college lacrosse Saturday.
Knight tied Butch McCleary's record set against Navy in 1958.
Knight scored four goals in the third quarter to rally the Cavs from a 9-7 halftime deficit to tie the score at 14-14 after three quarters. He also assisted on two goals.
Attackman Michael Watson, who had five assists, scored with 1:27 remaining to put the game away. Watson also had the tie-breaking goal with 5:20 left in the game, only the Cavaliers' second lead.
Virginia (1-0) outshot the Orangemen (0-1) 28-13 in the second half, 54-39 for the game. Goalie Jason Gebhart had 27 saves for Syracuse, and Cavalier goalie Chris Sanderson had 10 saves.
Casey Powell and Matt Doyle had three goals each for Syracuse. David Baruch and Tim Whitely added two goals for Virginia.
The Cavaliers will play host to third-ranked Princeton on March 9 at 2 p.m.
