A University of Virginia historian has recreated the Staunton, Va., and Chambersburg, Pa., of Civil War years and posted the tale of the two cities on the World Wide Web.
The cities were nearly identical except that they were on the opposite sides of the Mason-Dixon line.
``I saw it as a metaphor for how the [Civil] War came together as a whole,'' said Edward L. Ayers, a history professor. The cities had ``so much in common, but yet there was this one fatal difference.''
