TECH DOWNS SEAHAWKS IN BASEBALL

Virginia Tech took advantage of four UNC Wilmington errors on Sunday and got 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief from Sean Hummel to post a 6-3 college baseball victory over the Seahawks in Wilmington, N.C.

Junior right fielder Matt Reynolds had a two-run home run for the Hokies (2-1) in the first inning.

In other college baseball:

* Junior first baseman Tommy Peterson tied a school record with five hits as Georgia Southern completed a three-game sweep of VMI, 14-5. W.G. Smith lasted into the eighth for the Keydets (0-12) and was responsible for 13 hits, nine earned runs, six walks and three strikeouts.

* In Lexington, West Virginia Tech downed Washington and Lee 24-16 in a game marred by 10 errors. The two teams played seven innings in 3:47.

Preston Miller went 2-for-5 with four RBI for the Generals (2-5).

* In Greenville, N.C., East Carolina swept Radford 3-1 and 5-3.

In the first game, Patrick Dunham pitched a five-hit complete game and struck out eight Highlanders. In the second game, Radford's Shane Reed was 2-for-3 with one RBI for Radford (0-4). Travis Thompson and Chris Vernon each hit home runs to pace the Pirates (5-1).

Radford to victory

Mike Basto's goal at 1:35 in overtime lifted Radford to a 9-8 men's lacrosse victory over Mount St. Mary's in Radford.

Basto scored three goals for the Highlanders (1-1), and Zack Karatonis and Bay Burch each scored two.

* Virginia Tech's softball team dropped two more games, falling to North Carolina 18-1 and to Coastal Carolina 8-0. Shortstop Melissa Sanderson has a four-game hitting streak for the Hokies (0-6).

* Roanoke's Carolyn Bucher, 15, finished fourth in the 200 butterfly and sixth in the 200 backstroke to win the high point award for the 15-16 girls' division at the Florida Senior Championships in Clearwater, Fla.

* Curtis Deal shot a 72 as Virginia Tech finished 13th at the Matlock Collegiate Classic at the par-72 Imperial Lakes Country Club in Lakeland, Fla. Teammate Robbie Rasmussen carded a 74, Sean Farrell added a 76 and David Lipes a 77.

Columbus College overcame high winds and cool temperatures to win the tournament, which was shortened from 54 to 36 holes because of rain. Columbus shot a 285 to finish at 566, seven strokes better than Wake Forest and North Carolina State. Virginia finished 15th at 595.

* Roanoke native Jeff Wendell finished in third place in the Atlanta Nationals road race held at the 2.5-mile Road Atlanta course in Gainsville, Ga.

Wendell, who drives a Dodge Neon sponsored by Dominion Dodge and John Norman, was just edged out of second place on the last lap in the 45-mile race. The race was sponsored by Sportscar Club of America.

* Several Blacksburg natives did well in the Cane Creek mountain bike race held in Charlotte.

In the men's expert category, Chris Pohowsky finished 13th out of 33 racers. In the women's sport category, Lora Zimmerman won the race with Karen Ruggio finishing second. Dominque Montgomery finished fifth in the 6-12 age group.

In the men's sport category, Brian Bond was ninth out of 65 racers; Kurt Smits came in 13th; Jim Stone 14th; Chris Lenth 30th; Ash Amanna 33rd; and Wes Best 48th.

* Mike Stearns of Roanoke's Team Smiley finished second in the category 4 race at Polar Bear Criterion bicycle competition at Hampton. Wes Wilmer of Roanoke's Xaloy team placed fifth in the Pro, 1, 2, 3.
