5 STUDENTS SELECTED AS SENIORS OF THE MONTH

The following Montgomery County students have been selected as Seniors of the Month for February.

Meggen Johnson of Auburn High is vice president of her senior class, treasurer of the National Honor Society and vice president of the Beta Club. She also is involved with the newspaper staff as photography editor. She's recipient of a National Leadership Award, National Science Award and National Math Award.

She also participates in forensics, and placed at district, regional and state competitions in original oratory. She is the daughter of Cheryl Johnson of Christiansburg.

nComputers, forensics and debate are three activities that Rasheq Rahman enjoys participating in. The Blacksburg High student has attended several computer camps, participated and placed at the several computer programming competition and is a member of the Computer Programming Team. He is a computer lab assistant at the Energy Systems Research Lab at Virginia Tech. Rahman also has worked as a World Wide Web project manager and database programmer for the Center for Energy and Global Environment at Virginia Tech.

He also has debated in various state and regional debate tournaments and forensics competition and has attended the National Debate Institute in Washington, D.C.

He is a member of the French Club, Jefferson Club, Klassroom Kwiz and National Honor Society. He also is the features editor of the school newspaper and writes a computer column for an English language publication in Bangladesh. In addition to English, Rahman also speaks French, Japanese and Bengali.

He is the son of Yasmin and Saifur Rahman of Blacksburg.

A three-year member of the football team at Christiansburg High, David Epperly made All-District team as a sophomore and second-team All-District as a junior. As a senior, he was team captain.

Epperly also wrestled for three years and was a district champion as a sophomore. A four-year baseball player, he was All-District runner-up as a sophomore and first team All-District as a junior. He received the Kevin Scott Award as a junior.

Epperly also has been involved in the Monogram Club, Beta Club, yearbook staff and was Homecoming King as a senior. He is the son of Bobby and Lynn Epperly of Christiansburg.

Shawsville High student Paige Bower has participated in various clubs and organizations during the past four years, including the Spanish Club, College Club, Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the prom committee. She was junior class treasurer and currently is treasurer of Students Against Drunk Driving.

She also was a cheerleader for two years and was recognized as the most dedicated (1993) and most improved (1994) cheerleader.

Her academic awards include the National Mathematics Award, Academic letter and Academic Barr. She also has been involved for four years with Broomin' and Bloomin' and is a member of a youth group. She is the daughter of Lowell and Betty Bower of Elliston.

A 4th-grade teacher at Bethel Elementary School recently received a $3,000 grant from the Virginia Environmental Endowment.

Pam Clements will use the money to purchase supplies and equipment to conduct an interdisciplinary thematic unit on water quality. Students in Clements' class will learn about the importance of a clean water supply to the ecosystem and the detrimental effects that water pollutants can have on the environment. She also will talk about the importance of watershed and some of the most serious threats threats to the water in the immediate community. Clements will review relevant geographic features of the immediate community and select a stream to monitor over the next two years.

Students in the class will conduct actual field experiments within the adopted stream. They will determine the presence of pollutants, identify, classify and catalog various macroinvertebrates, identify the possible sources of these pollutants and will develop potential solutions to eliminate them from the stream.

EVENTS, HAPPENINGS & MEETINGS

The Christiansburg High School after prom celebration committee will meet March 18 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be in the girls' health room. For more information, call 381-0059 or 382-5178.

Fourth-graders at Gilbert Linkous Elementary School will have a fund-raiser today at Baskin Robbins/Sub Station in Blacksburg from 4 to 8 p.m. Money is being raised to help fund a trip to Williamsburg in the spring.

Auburn High's Eagle Pride will meet March 11 at 7 p.m. in the school library. Chris Burton and Diane Wagoner will present an overview of the Special Education Program that is implemented at the high school. Information on SHARE will also be presented. Montgomery County Schools will offer Saturday art courses in the spring to students in grades 9-12. Courses will be offered in the following areas of interest: batik and papermaking, oil painting; sculpture and mold making, and weaving. Students are able to make first and second choices.

The program runs for eight Saturdays in April and May from 9 a.m. to noon at Christiansburg High School. Students who are interested should submit their portfolio work by March 11. They will be notified of the status of their acceptance by the week of March 18. Applications can be picked-up from high school art teachers. For more information, call Linda Waggaman at 382-5100.
